Thunderbird Club

I just got my first Thunderbird! It was a birthday gift from my wonderful fiance. Yes, I'm a lucky guy. It's the Epiphone in TV Silver, which I love. Now I need a case. I was looking at the Epiphone web site and they show this picture of the Thunderbird case which looks different than the ones I've seen. It's a trapezoid shape rather than a rectangle, so it's less wide. I like this, but am wondering if these are out in the market yet, or is it a new design? Has anyone seen this?

Has anyone here compared the Deep Sixx pups to regular epis? I gotta believe they are the same. I'm so on the fence about a pup change in my Bird. I was going to go EMG 35p&J cuz I love that sound but now that I found a J I'm wondering if I should leave it be? It sounds great already. I considered TB+ pups but that would require body work that I'm just not doing (too busy with making fake cabinets lol)

It's a brand new model...

Don't know if they are shipping yet, though...

According to this pickup chart they are supposed to have a slightly higher output that the regular TB+ pickups...

I bought a pair which I intend to put into my Goth, but I haven't yet had a chance to compare them to each other.

Tried to measure them with a multimeter, but either my multimeter doesn't work properly or I'm a multimeter-illiterate cause I just can't get a stable reading on it...

Not true...maybe Rob from Number One Guitars in the Netherlands will check in. He was intimately involved in B&CH's development of the NR. Had Gibson been instituted a cease and desist he certainly would have let it be known on Last Bass Outpost. I believe it was simply a question of lack of demand. Of course if you have some proof I'll stand corrected. Any intellectual property that Gibson owned on the NR expired long ago, especially in Europe.

I got a mail from numerbone guitars (I asked them whether the NRs would go in stock again) and this is what I got:

Hello Tommy,

I'm afraid the BaCHbirds will not be taken back in production. Gibson lawyers have threatened the hell out of BaCH...

Kind regards,

Rob van den Broek

That's interesting...

Copyrights in Europe usually run out after 50 years - After that, it's usually fair game...

So basically sometime after 2016-2019 (depending on when Gibson copyrighted the NR's) it could actually be safe to produce them again..? ;)

Obviously I stand corrected. Thanks! Though I doubt it would stand up in EU courts.

The new to me Bird got plugged in last night. The jack was a little loose, but everything worked. When I pulled the cover, one of the leads to the jack was de-soldered. Go figure. It worked without a lead to the jack? How is that possible? Anyway, a little solder later, and it sounds even better. It is absolutely thunderous. I didn't have a chance to crank it up, and probably won't for a couple weeks, but it packs a whallop anyway. I was surprised at how much variation you could get from adjusting the volume pots and the single tone pot. Being unmodified Bird-less for a period of time means forgetting things. Now I have to think about what strings to put on it. It's got rounds of some kind, and they sound pretty good. There are some experiments to come, including using a piece of foam as a bridge mute to see the whole range of what this thing can do. It is sensitive to where you play it, too. It has a sweet spot between the pickups, but it sounds good everywhere else. Just different. Gotta love exploring a new instrument.

New design & no idea if it's ready for ordering or even on sale at this point. But maybe. in any case, must be less of a hassle & less weight to carry around.

Was wondering the same thing, but AFAIR, they did have a higher output, but only slightly. Probably due to the control layout with just a killswitch, rather than the typical VVT.

But i'd rather have either the gibson deep Sixx, or the classic tb+ gibson pups.
This has gotta be of interest to someone here in the group:

Thomann has for some reason apparently discontinued this (Harley Benton TB-70VS):

But has replaced it with this one instead (Harley Benton BT-70VS):

I wonder why they did the change...?

Maybe they decided to bring back the ESP/LTD phoenix version rather than the Thunderbird. but who know,s somehow i like it better.

on A note after i've caught up with this group, i think later on in life i might make a neck for my goth bird. As much as i can play it, it's hard to get around & feels weird when i jump from my slim neck basses (which is all of them) to that one. It's just a handful, & i don't want to mess with the original neck to make it slimmer & such if ever i wanted to sell it later on.

It appears I forgot to attach the pickup chart from Epiphone, which clearly states the DeepSixx pickups have a higher output than the regular TB? pickups...
