Thunderbird Club

The link is dead now that the bass has shipped, but I'll be sure to post once it gets here. It's a total roll of the dice with GC's quality though, so I'm not counting on it as a sure thing yet. I'm also about to receive a 2013 TB 50th Anniversary bass from them as well, and it's equally tentative on whether or not I'll end up keeping it. Sure is pretty, though!

Oh! I still have the ShortBird window up from when I ordered it. Here's the only pic I could grab.

Already short scale is kinda on the line, a 5 string version would be useless. There's already a flop on a long scale B string, imagine a short scale. Would be mud reduced to nothing
It depends a little on the thickness of the string, too. An enormously thick string would tune up and not flop as much, but it might be the size of a bridge cable.

My preference is not set in stone, but I usually like 105-45 better than lighter gauges. If the strings are too light, they feel floppy. Different strings feel right in different gauges. How is that for a non-answer!

Different hearts beat on different strings...

50-110 for my birds, 50-105 for the other basses in my collection. One Pbass copy has 45-105 & it sounds great, another has 45-105 by GHS & i forgot how great they felt & sounded! Haven't played GHS in a good 10 + years.

Well, I'm officially dumb as a stump. It turns out that the Broughton pedal I though had been mis-delivered or stolen was hidden so well by the letter carrier that I didn't find it for two straight weeks. It was inside a flower pot on our front porch, safe and sound. Maybe a little on the cool side, but dry and undamaged, so far as I can tell.

Yes, I'm a dummy, a happy dummy.

Now I need to figure out how to use it. The high pass is already familiar because of the fDeck. Low pass is one I don't have a handle on at all. I assume it cuts mostly inaudible frequencies, but if the filter cuts down to 16khz or so instead of 20, it might clean up a bit of fret click and tinniness, especially with the little Carvin amp. Suggestions from those who use them?
Part 1: Great!; Part 2::confused:

I thought I heard the applause-like sound of hands hitting faces from here.

Welp, with Christmas cash I was able to order a 4th Thunderbird. That's not nearly as impressive as some of the collections in this thread, but it's remarkable to me at least that 6 months ago I started with zero. My only rule regarding TBs is that each one has its own "thing" that it does that the others do not.

The newest one is one of those TB Short Scales. Haven't read much about it, other than an old post Tbird was pretty active in, and the Gibson Bass Book didn't seem to like it. But this bass will be my home practice bass while I'm taking online lessons, and I doubt that I'll ever gig or rehearse with it. I like short scales for home practice as I feel like it's easier to move around the fretboard vs normal scale, so it's helpful when I'm learning new concepts. Currently, I have a Gibby SG bass that I like well enough, but I just can't get it to sound the way I'd like. I think I've read that the SG bass and TBs have essentially the same pups, but my SG bass doesn't sound anything like a typical 34" TB, so I'm hoping it's improved by going the TB route. Plus, I just like the body shape of TBs more than SGs. I'm probably going to sell the SG bass if the new 'Bird works out.

So any thoughts on the Shortbirds?
I would love a ss Bird. Where did you find yours? Unfortunately, the only Christmas cash in my world flows out from me to the kids (yes, they’re adults, but...). For now, my couch bass is a Mustang.
