Thunderbird Club

Saw this over in the GP. I know, i know. it's a 7ender and lots of dough, but it was JAE's.

Gruhn Guitars
It's a nice one but an outrageous asking price. Maybe worth half that considering what it is, who owned it (no pun intended) and the provenance. But $25,000 for a refin CBS P bass that hasn't (AFAIK) been used on any recordings or live performances is beyond a bit steep.

I own probably one of the top ten rarest basses from John's collection and probably couldn't get a quarter of that price at a Sotheby's auction. All that said, any instrument is worth as much as the highest bidder is willing to pay for it. I'll be sure to keep my eye on the sale, can't wait to see what it actually goes for (if Gruhn will even share that info).

Totally agree with you. It's more the cool factor then anything for me. And you're a beast for having that bass of his.

That might not be it. The Gruhn P bass clearly has only two control knobs. The one in your pic looks like it has more, but the pic is a bit blurry so I might be wrong.

I noticed that as well. So either it is, and it has been modded after his ownership. Or he had more then one?
I bet @Dadagoboi might be able to answer this question.

The three knob is the famous one. Lots of info out there.

Thanks for enlarging it. Left to right- Mike Lull T5. Epi body refin in Pelham Blue with Lakland neck. '64 that I have had since 1975, refin by RS Guitarworks. Epi Elite that I got as a basket case, put '60s style bridge and Thunderbuckers on it. Yes I am a member 475 or somewhere close to that number.
Ok, that does it....time for a Reverse Lull!!..drool....

Parts of that bass and few others (including two other slabs he owned and some other Fenders) would be cobbled together to create Frankenstein. The bass at Gruhn's is featured in Entwistle's Bass Book, and as he mentions in there was bought far later in his life since none of his originals survived.

I hope you don't mind...…..Way too cool to not have a bigger picture - That's a fine group of 'Birds. I think you should tell us a little about them - I'd have to check the club list to be sure, you may already be there.

I'm contemplating using RS Guitarworks for a refin, if you don't mind me asking, what was the approximate cost? And on the Epi, how was the process for swapping the two point for the three point?
