Both Michael Tobias and Roger Sadowski insist the most noticeable tonal material is fretboard wood. They would know better than me. Most of my basses are Ebony, rosewood or Pao Ferro, but really I just prefer the look/feel of dark fingerboards that aren’t too heavily lacquered. That said, I’ve had some amazing basses with maple boards. By now I guess I’ve played too many basses to say anything is ‘better’ than anything else

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this was one of the design considerations for Entwistle's Fenderbirds as I remember reading how much he liked the Fender "blonde" boards..

That would require a technician visit = money (valves, labour, handcart), inconvenience and probable disruption to domestic harmony for a day or two.

Just a day or two? Blame me. It's usually my fault anyway, so why would this be different?

My Precision has a lacquered maple board. The lacquer has holes worn in it now. I'm not sure that counts any more. Funny thing is that it was a poser Road Worn that I bought because it felt so good. Now it really is worn. The finish they put on those is remarkably thin, and I went through it like I was an alien. I don't get through Gibson finishes in nearly the same way. There's probably a moral to this story, but I don't know what it is.

Back in the 80’s, I couldn’t get anything for a Guild B301 because it had a set neck. They all told me it would warp and couldn’t be set up properly. I think they were feeding me a big bowl of steaming crap.

My talent/skill is the limiting factor. Wood plays no part in my playing. Ahem.

I would quite happily sit down and listen to them give their reasons over a pot of tea and a slice of cake. It's not a hill I'm planning to die on, just seems logical is all. As (almost) always I'm happy to be proven wrong.

The early '80s bias against set necks and anything Gibson that wasn't a Les Paul is how I got my EB-2. If I had only known then what I know now, I would have picked up a couple early '60s Thunderbirds, too. Except I didn't have any money or anywhere to put them. Small details. The big detail is that I just flat hadn't been chosen by a 'Bird yet, so I didn't know.

I love beam power tubes, and anything with a plate cap makes me extra happy. (I recall someone in a guitar amp forum a decade ago insisting that all power tubes with caps were grid cap tubes. There's always an "expert.")

Anyone here ever play through a Fender PS400? I've always wanted a chance just because.
Also, did anyone know Rich Koerner of Time Electronics? Bass player and tube amp guru (PS400 genius among other things). I hadn't heard from him in a few years and just found out he died a few years back. Crap. Don't let yourself lose touch with people you care about. Just don't.
