So...I picked up a 10 year old Epiphone thunderbird goth the other day (always wanted a T-bird). Only $150 because it was beat up a bit, though it plays and sounds great. I really disliked that black pickguard with the Celtic cross, so I experimented a bit. Sanded it down, threw a couple of coats of white spray paint on it. Then I picked up a can of clear "matte coat" spray paint to seal it. However, I must have not read some part of the directions, because the two paints interacted in an odd - but super cool way. Turned out like white cracked leather.

The orange peeling looks cool. Is it durable (i.e. won't just flake off)?

As long as it doesn't start peeling, it looks cool-and different. Maybe another coat of a compatible sealer?

Seems pretty sturdy to the touch (about 36 hours after the last of 3 thin coats of that matte sealer). Maybe I should do another coat or two of the sealer just in case....

Dogs are one of my absolutely favorite things in the world, but NYC is really hard. They're stuck in an apartment all day except for the times you take them out. And people in big cities aren't home often.

As a retired commercial diver I have dove in some pretty shotty places. Being in the Chicago area i once found myself having to dive on a travelling screen(clean/repair) in the CalSag river. When I climbed the ladder out the guys stopped me. The guys had to remove both a hypodermic needle that was stuck in the back of my gloveand unbenounced to me there was a condum damgling from my nose clearing device ( hard hat dive). I still get shivers from the condom.

Possibly, but I think it's more about the nature of what it is and who is willing to shell out that amount of money. (more about marketing)

Not much of a welder, worked for a long time in the Gulf of Mexico, oilfield trash. Moved to Chi Town and the whole thing changed, not nearly as much fun factor. Did a lot of pumping crap and tearing dow and rebuilding traveling screens. mostly in steel mills but also power plants Nuclear and otherwise, Even had to do a job once in a poop plant, fortunately I didn't have to get in the tank. Poor guy that did get to make the dive said he could still smell it even with triple redundant exhaust valves. The drysuit and all the rubber parts for his hat were immediately disposed, and/or replaced, not so fun job~ There is surprisingly a very small amount of welds done under water. Most guys that say they did didn't dive either. Its an extremely small world in the Diving Industry.
