Update on my daughter’s (not really a punk)band:
They decided to call it “The Chili Joint”...

My daughter is now on vocals only and her friend (former band mate) is going to play bass. That girl brings great energy, but lives about 4 hours away, so yours truly gets to fill in at rehearsals when she’s not there.

I introduced them to this tune and they’re going to play it:

Great! On all fronts. I am taking back control of the name Taylor Swift Kick in the Nuts. My brother and I will be using it. And Godzilla is a huge amount of fun to lay. It is unfortunate that it does not feature the cowbell. And you have to memorize a little Japanese.

I guess he didn't get the memo that those things suck out all your tone. So did the drum solos come before or after the bass solo? Or were they weaved within all the bass solos? Sure you aren't remembering correctly and you weren't actually at Guitar Center?

Wankery is so 80s. Don't care for it. Although I like my politics separate from my music, I do like U2. And it is primarily because they all play right in the pocket. Even the Edge with all his delays and effects, he keeps everything right in the pocket - a talent demonstrated by too few guitar players. And I like Slash's solos - he gets more done with one note (ok, with a wah) than EVH does with 64.

Let's bring Angus Young into this. I think he's pretty perfect in these respects.

As for bass stuff, Paul Turner keeps himself really busy here, but I find it pure pleasure to watch/listen.

I love Jeff Beck's playing and he always selects great musicians to play with. And one part of the reason is that he "leaves room for the song to breathe". And despite his name being on the banner, all the players get their time to shine (more than once). And the solos are short! If any solo (and instrument) is long enough that the rest of the band leaves the stage, you have lost my interest.

James Brown used to fire any bassist that overplayed in no time..

Funny how after you've put some of your own fingerprint on an instrument, you warm up to it. I've got a Squier mutt someone put together for me, just charged me for the parts. Squier-II neck (mid-80s Samick factory, Korea, Maple board), Vint/Mod Agathis Jaguar body in glossy black, alnico'V p'ups. Custom wiring harness w/CTS pots and Switchcraft bits. Hipshot D-tuner.

Damn thing plays beautifully, strong output and clear, punchy sound. I've tried to not love it, but I kinda do. If the shoe fits, kick some sh!t with it I guess.

Still got a comfy and hopeful space saved in my quiver for a 'Bird, but she'll come along...

Funny how after you've put some of your own fingerprint on an instrument, you warm up to it. I've got a Squier mutt someone put together for me, just charged me for the parts. Squier-II neck (mid-80s Samick factory, Korea, Maple board), Vint/Mod Agathis Jaguar body in glossy black, alnico'V p'ups. Custom wiring harness w/CTS pots and Switchcraft bits. Hipshot D-tuner.

YES! Congratulations. I love that body style. Another cool bass Fender doesn't make in left-handed, except for in Japan. As I said in another thread, "Here's a P and a J. Knock yourself out." (insert middle finger emoji here)

I believe he's using using a Darkglass pedal there, for what that's worth. I first learned about this band from a link off Darkglass' blog.

I saw SNL last weekend. The guitar player in Gary Clarke jr.'s band was playing a left-handed telecaster right handed. I immediately thought that there would be a gang of left handed players out there swearing at their TVs because it is hard enough to get LH instruments without right handers scooping up the limited supply.

I have no strong feelings for or against Angus; I probably haven't devoted much thought to him. But as a band (at the height of their popularity in the 80s and 90s) AC/DC performed incredibly well as a unit. And they wrote some great songs. Saw them twice back in the day.

Wife scolded me for having surpassed the previously agreed upon volume limit with both 1x15's hooked up. Apparently a coveted figurine fell of the shelf and broke. In the living room.

Yeah, I have a 200w 15 combo that is not allowed to be used in the house anymore. Rattles everything. I’ve figure fair game when she’s out though. Didn’t think about potential damage to her collection in the living room though. If I broke one.....

The volume on my GK 150W 112 combo rarely gets past 9:00.

I've seen Lou Reed in a couple of interesting situations. At The Orpheum in Boston in 1996, with Luna opening. At the end of Luna's set, Lou came out and did Ride Into the Sun with Luna as his backing band. Then Luna left the stage and Lou's band came on. I don't think there was any break. The second time was in 2006 at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. He performed the entire Berlin album. Both were pretty great.

On the subject of J basses. Obviously, many have made incredible music on em. I’ve owned 3 very nice ones, but in the end they just weren’t for me. That ain’t a slag on those basses or anyone who plays em. I’m kinda wising I would’ve hung on to my Bluesman Vintage Jbass after seeing a couple sweet jazzbirds. The ergos were great.

I’m still on the fence about using Black Beauties on my Gretsch bass...kinda cool, but I think big thumpy flats just work a little better on that bass.
The gig I did last night was sold out at the Star Bar, though it’s a smallish place (300ish?). Before our show, there was a Ramones tribute where 12(!) bands played two songs each, then Eskimo Brothers did an hour of mostly originals. The host band, Psycho Devilles closed out the night and we were all strongly encouraged to use their gear to make changeovers quicker. Super cool people. The bass players rig was a 1001rb with two GK 410 cabs. I patched my Grace Felix pre in front and did half the set on upright and the other half on the Gretsch. I managed to get an acceptable sound out of that rig, but really regretted not setting up my own rig. The more I play through other rigs the more I appreciate my own. Probably just because of familiarity, but those GK 410’s sounded a lot like Edens to me and I’ve never got the appeal of that cab. Mushy lows, super loud, horn like mid bass and brittle highs. I just don’t get it. I think the owner of the rig is just happy he’s able to get loud enough to compete with the guitars and that rig certainly gets loud, but that’s about all I can say for it. Oddly, GK makes a couple decent cabs in the RBX series but they weigh a ton and almost no one seems to use em anymore

Hmm. Maybe you could turn him on to some better cabs-if ya know of any.
