Thunderbird Club

Who was at a concert that ended up on an album?
DirtyBird was there for "Rock and Roll Animal".
Our queen was there for "On Your Feet or On Your Knees".
Added: RedVee @ Bowie Glass Spider tour in Sydney (on DVD)
Who else?

I could have been at Skynyrd's Fox Theater concert, "One More From the Road", but for some stupid reason didn't. While it's not in the same class as the above two, I still kick myself for missing it.

Sometimes the simple songs are just so much fun to play. Was jammin with the guys tonight and played these songs among others...

Both songs have nice solid laid back bass lines that you can play in your sleep but are so prominent in the sound and feel of the song.

Nothin better than playing a simple song well

I use either SoundCloud or YouTube for that reason :)
Yeah, but this is even more public than I like to make things like that. Those sites are right out there for anyone to come across.

The 2 P's and a J in the corner.
Oh, right. I've seen that.

That Lou Reed Berlin show I was at was made into and album and/or a video. I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on the Henry's Dream tour, which became the awesome Live Seeds album, but not sure if any of my show was on it.

When I first started playing bass everyone seemed to play a P bass or a Ric, so I had it in my head that they were too ‘typical’ and wanted to ‘stand out’ more, so I avoided them and played Gibson basses. I didn’t yet know that it’s the player who stands out, not the bass. I think the KS basses, among others stood out because they weren’t P basses.
By the mid 80’s I played P basses almost exclusively. Oddly full circle that I primarily play Gibson’s again...this time by choice :)
I bought a cheap($50)Beatle bass copy in the Philippines in 67. It was OK/a POS for a starter. (I entered the Navy music program in 64 as a[mediocre]saxophonist.) In 67, when I was transferred to Charleston, SC, the Navy issue bass was an EB-3. Loved it right away and I put the 'balsa bass' away(sold it later for $125). Bought my own EB-3 as soon as the Navy and I said "adios"(68) and played it until I got the 67 NR TBird in 72(or 73[?]). Put the EB-3 away and rarely played it after getting the 'Bird. Sold the(66)EB-3 to a guy in the Vancouver, BC, area[he couldn't get used to it and sold it to someone in Nashville-well travelled bass!]. Bought an Epi EB-3L as a backup for outdoor heat/humidity Florida gigs. It neckdove(dived?) way worse than the TBird ever has.(Sold it). Also have my Gibson LPB2/5, an Ibanez AGB 200 for a more UB-y sound, a 5quier VM Jaguar SS as backup/tight space bass and my EpiBird 5er. But the 67NR is and will be my "A" bass 'til I can't play any more.

I've always loved that song for some reason...

It's seriously epic. My musician friends from Wisconsin know all the words by heart and it's played whenever they are together. I've been included a few times over the years.

I had my demos hidden on my other soundcloud account, but got sick of having to circulate the new secret link everytime I updated anything ... so they're there for the world to find, if it can be bothered. Me and a zombie drummer, with a posh woman shouting 'verse' and 'chorus' so the singer knows which bit is which.

So this is the aforementioned madness i've been up to. Going to pair this up with the M6.
Me thinks it's going to be very cool. The Ashly pre that is.

SOLD - Ashley “Geddy Lee” SC-40 Preamp

Innocent question. Why ? What is it you are looking for that this provides ?

Does a DVD count?
Bowie Glass Spider tour in Sydney.

Yes, I loved every minute of that concert. One of the early “big” productions.
What a star.

I may be wrong, but what makes EMG pu's difference is their impedance. They are low impedance which is then aided by a powered preamp harness. Being low impedance gives them more nuance, subtlety of colour, but doesn't prevent them from being used in a passive bass.

Therefore they'll work in my "passive" bass wired direct to the single killswitch. Since i'm in no way using an onboard preamp to boost/cut frequencies, would i still need the battery to power the pickups?

yes, the the buffer preamp is potted into the pickup. I really dig EMGs but never tried them on a T-Bird..

It's worked for Sixx & almost every metal bass player of the time, & most have pretty great tones. My dislike of EMGS, or 'active' pickups, were mainly cause of a repetitive tone which sounded sterile to my ears. Guess having played & owned nothing but passive basses, it was a no brainer to ever own something active.

I fiddled around with Tiger & the combination of the QP split & the classic stack J is really good. As i've said, enough bite, punch & clarity. I may try the Actives just to see what sound difference i achieve with them, & if i end up liking them over the current setup, so be it. I will however be getting a Jazzmaster pickup cover for the bridge pup position.

So i'm debating swapping the pickups in my Tigerbird from passive to active. I've a set of EMG P/J that i pulled from a 73 pbass i had restored in the process. Currently, tiger sports a Quarter pounder split P in the middle, & a Classic stack J in the bridge (was part of a set but having 3 pickups in it really lacked tone rather than giving it variety. & I'm a passive guy dominantly, but was thinking, maybe one Active equipped bass wouldn't be the end. By all means, the current sound isn't bad at all, it's got balls & definition as all hell. It's all going to a single killswitch, to be kept in mind for the active pup swap if ever i do proceed with it.

Anyone wanna talk me out of installing Active pickups in my bass? If not, have any insight on how EMGS have worked for you perhaps. what you enjoy of them, or for those who don't use active pickups, what has put you off of them? I know i never was particularly drawn to the tone, but it might just be the guitars over bass pickups. in basses the preamp suffers more than the pups themselves.

EDIT: Tigerbird was built inspired by Nikki Sixx's Hamers & spectors which did sport EMGS going to single volumes. I guess, in retrospect, this would just be the nail in the coffin for the whole Nikki vibe. & listening to isolated motley crue bass tracks, & they do sound good.
I thought the point of active was dialing in a sound with the preamp's EQ. At least in part. A kill switch bypasses all that. As long as the pickups also work passive, it would be an interesting experiment.

Well i don't mind using a battery with the EMG pickups if required, but i don't need an onboard preamp (mainly cause i don't want to start carving the control cavity), The only control i have & want to keep is an on/off switch for the pickups, & the output jack. I'm a less is more guy when it comes to controls both on bass & amps. Although i can't speak in terms of the amount of gear i own :P currently trying to downsize, but there's always another idea popping in my head.

20 years ago, I made a record with one of my old bands...the label said we needed another song, so I recorded this with me on upright and some dudes who actually can play jazz. The label was less than thrilled...

I hope I didn’t come off as dissing because I love jazz, I just suck at playing it :)

That was friction awesome! I loved it!
