My normal Tuesday gig was unusually packed last night. Played my ‘02 Gibson w/ Lollars and a new set of Cobalt flats. For whatever reason, this new set of Cobalts don’t sound quite as good as the last set. A tiny bit less snap, but they still sound really good. Tons of local celebs out to see one the up and comers who was on earlier (Jeremy Ivy, Margo Price’ husband). The T Bird continues to get tons of unsolicited praise from fellow musicians. That bass just kicks like a mule. It’s gotten to the point where I get a lot of “Where’s the T Bird?” comments when I don’t play it :)

Avantone CR-14 ribbon mic. Comes with a decent shock mount, the mic itself comes in a nice wooden box, then both are inside a nice, fitted case for $260. Gonna A/B it with my AEA R84 later today, which will likely be a bloodbath, but we’ll see!

I'll be curious to know what you think. I liked the one I had well enough, but I also don't have access to the kind of recording space you have access to (or so I would hope anyway). When I had the CR-14, the Basement of Bad Ideas was still a sheetrock box with no baffles or anything else on the walls or ceiling.

Just started to do my little mic shootout when I realized I left my R84 in Jamie’s car and she’s out running errands. Started anyway, using the CR-14, as well as my EV RE27 and RE20 on voice/speech. Just used the preamp in my Steinberg MR816X audio interface with no processing of any kind. Gonna do acoustic guitar and mic a vintage Fender champ on electric guitar as well. Might even mic a bass amp for fun :)

Just on what little voice recording I’ve done so far, obviously the CR-14 picks up more of the room than my dynamics, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. My little mix space is in my living room, completely untreated. It’s a rectangular shaped room and though not unpleasant sounding, is quite lively. I just carefully check my tonal balances with some Izotope software and a nice pair of Grado headphones. I really should soundtreat the room, but I’m getting decent results as is, despite my tendency to overdo it in the low mids

I should send you a 330 just to play with and get your impression. They are a whole lot cheaper than an R84, even when they are overpriced (in my estimation.) Being cardioid instead of figure 8 makes them more like a BK-5 or RCA 77 with the baffles. So, they are different. One was reribboned using NOS RCA ribbon, but I'll be darned if I can tell which one it was now.

If your ceiling is high enough and there's enough soft furniture and other stuff in there, it's a big improvement over the basement. The basement is a room that's almost twice as long as wide, which makes for some really unpleasant effects, or did until I started putting up panels everywhere, especially over and next to the drums. I haven't built any baffles or gobos yet.
