Thunderbird Club

Just on what little voice recording I’ve done so far, obviously the CR-14 picks up more of the room than my dynamics, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. My little mix space is in my living room, completely untreated. It’s a rectangular shaped room and though not unpleasant sounding, is quite lively. I just carefully check my tonal balances with some Izotope software and a nice pair of Grado headphones. I really should soundtreat the room, but I’m getting decent results as is, despite my tendency to overdo it in the low mids
Love Grados. I've had a pair of Alessandro MS-1 for well over 10 years and still love them. They're just Grados modified to be flatter.

Incoming!

Avantone CR-14 ribbon mic. Comes with a decent shock mount, the mic itself comes in a nice wooden box, then both are inside a nice, fitted case for $260. Gonna A/B it with my AEA R84 later today, which will likely be a bloodbath, but we’ll see!

A pity you can't have a few more to try.

These look really interesting as the base model can be had for $US150 and sounds pretty good on drums and guitar from demos I've heard ... and then you can upgrade the capsule later.

I looked them up - $550, not $150. There's a bit of difference. Unless I looked up the wrong thing. I'm sure they are great, being Rode and all.

[Edit] You meant the OPR. Never mind. Yes, those look like a bargain. They look a lot like Golden Age Project mics, except with a different and likely more effective shock mount.

OPR sell The Rocket in a pair for $AU200 each. I'm not sure the NTR is worth the bother, what with the capsule having to bolted down everytime it's moved.

New desk toy arrived.

$200 AUD each for a pair of ribbons, even if they are 2.5 micron ribbons, is a bargain. Thicker ribbons mean they ought to stand up to more sound pressure and more beating around by unruly drummers and the like.

I've got my fingers crossed, but had to laugh my butt off today.

I got an email confirmation from GC this morning saying the item I purchased (a "2015 Gibson Thunderbird") has been shipped. So, being the trusting individual that I am I logged into the GC used gear website and looked to see if the specific store had taken the old ad down. They did!

However, it looks like they promptly replaced the old ad with a new much more accurate ad (well, at least the brand is correct this time). I'm now debating on buying their ultra rare 2018 Gibson Thunderbird made in 2015... might be the only one in existence....

Zoom in and you'll see the tell tale 2015 pup, bridge and coil tap switches.
...sometimes you just can't fix stupid!
If I could get a deal like I did when I bought mine new, I’d get a second one for flats.

I am amused looking through OPR's website. They modify cheapo ribbons using the kind of vanishingly thin aluminum ribbon Coles, Reslo, and the like used. That's not what amused me. The amusement comes from looking at the forms of the cheapo mics. They are built to look like RCA 77s and other vintage mics. If you look at some of the cheapo brands on Reverb, like Apex and MXR, they are built to look like 77s, and 74s, and U87s, and so on, whether they are ribbons, condensers, or dynamic. Visual hearing at its best. As a shallow person, I approve.

$AU200 each, but still a bargain. A pair of those and a couple of dynamics should cover everything, except maybe vocals.

A single Rocket (2.5μm) is $AU300, the Rocket U-Mod (1.8μm) is $AU549 and the Rocket 4038 (0.6μm) is $AU699.

My reading comprehension is sub-optimal today for some reason. As I recall, the Avantone CV-14 I had was a 2.0 micron ribbon. Actually two ribbons. There's a reason, but I don't know what the reason is. I don't remember the thickness of 330 ribbons. I'm sure it's thinner. I also don't recall the thickness of the NOS RCA ribbon that went into the rebuilt one. I'm sure it was thinner yet. Steven Sank, who did the re-ribbon told me I would get a discount on repairs if I would send him the person who blew on the mic and damaged it, or something like that. I don't let anybody near 'em without a pop filter. The cheaper ones, no problem. I figure they are pretty close to dynamic mic durability.

I just looked on Reverb at Shure 330s. The cheapest one is over $500. I don't think I paid more than $200 for any of the four I managed to scrounge up over the years. Looks like the days of scrounging those up cheap are over. That's too bad.
True all over. "I wish I hadn't sold my _____..."
