Thunderbird Club

Really, this is not a spoiler.

Anyone ever done a written comparison/description of the various T-Bird pickups, preferably from the same bass, (Thunderbucker, EPI Pro Bucker 760s, etc)? Some have a wide experience and are good at at describing PUs. For example:
The '60s version is thick, full and punchy.
-70s are slightly cleaner and a littler brighter. (Not correct, but I can't really tell with my '64 and '76 as the '76 always has flats
and the '64 TI AA rounds.)
-TBs are....
-Epi ProBuckers are.... (supposedly are close to the 60s version)

Seems like a good reference post to have instead of searching in various locations. Wishful thinking possibly.
And speaking of which. @Mantis Tobaggan , who did your Thunderbucker loaded Bird go to?
A TB member named MicG. Cool dude. That was a cool bass.

I think the biggest problem is that no one owns all the basses/pickup combinations and has the ability to record them as well.
Indeed. I wasn't really thinking of anyone person having all or even most or even recordings--but that would be nice! Just a few people who had tried or experience with a few was my thinking. Get a number of those and you can make a few general deductions from there. Like I said, likely wishful thinking!

Hey guys, Id like some opinions. Im having a local luthier build a bird for me.

Kind of a nikki sixx spectorbird but, short scale. Bolt on, alder body, maple neck, ebony board with block inlays. Sunburst body, black hipshot hardware, 2x2 headstock, each pickup gets a mini toggle for control. I plan on going with emg tbhz passive pups.

I want a really balanced, great playing bird to play crue tunes with a pick.

Whelp, you asked for opinions... I have one. Nikki's Gibsons were way more rock'n'roll than his Spectors. Why not start off with a Stock Short Scale Gibson TBird and Nikki-erize it?

Dude! Rubber glove! Cavity search?

Jeez, Miles... anticipatory exuberance? :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

The studio bird bodies are alittle bit smaller than normal, the spectors may be as well. Im wondering If I should downsize this "tweety" bird?

The Studio bodies are just as big and waaaaayyyy heavier. I'd not go down this road.

Is there any chance that the short scale gibson bird's body is the same size as the firebird guitar?

I hadn't read this post when I had written my previous post. Glad you're hip to the SS Gibson TBird. Not sure if the body is the same size as the Firbird, but with the Short Scale, you'll get Classic TBird looks in a fun-size package. My 5'4" tall 13 y/o son loves to play that bass out of all my Tbirds because of its lightweight and short scale reach. My 2 cents again... start here. It would have to be a cheaper and faster option for what you're looking for.

Larry, thanks for the input! Is there any way you could take some measurements comparing the ss to a regular bird? Wish I could have found a gibson ss but, they are rare. Would have been alot easier.

Sure, I can get you some measurements later this afternoon or evening. They come up petty regularly on eBay. Just fill out a eBay search for Short Scale Thunderbird and you'll get a hit pretty soon.

This one just sold two weeks ago.

Quick question... are you already locked into the build you described earlier, a custom SS Spectorbird?
