Thunderbird Club

So after reading a bit more about the available aftermarket pickups it's my understanding that you can't just drop in the Lollars or Thunderbuckers. Is this true? And are the Seymour Duncan custom shop pups able to be dropped in?

All three pickups you reference are the same dimensions. They drop in but require a spacer or extra foam underneath because they are shallower than Gibson pickups...we are talking Gibson TBirds, correct? Bolt on Epis are a different story.

1. Maple I should think, can you get hold of a plug cutter bit for your drill? And try to see that the grain of the plug runs the same direction as the grain you're setting them into.
*...get a piece of Maple to cut plugs from, drill your hole the same size as the plug cutter you use...
2. Make the hole so that the plug fits snug. You should need to tap them in lightly with a hammer- after you dip them in glue of course!.
3. With a sharp chisel shave away at it until your plug is flush/very nearly so, then use light sandpaper to bring it down. Go slow and be mindful, pay attention to where your non- cutting hand is, etc. Use the bevel side down, so it's not as easy to drive into the existing surface when you slip.

Are these just little screwholes?...

Yes.

Yup Gibson thunderbird

Change the pots no matter what pickups you choose. 500k volume, 250k tone, .05 (~.047) capacitor for ThunderBuckers.

Ask the other winders for their recommendations.

26695057_1516453328466123_1783708874_o.jpg Epi IV pro here as well. Sounds awesome, but hasn't seen much playing lately. It tends to rub my wrist down to dermis if I don't be mindful or wear some kind of protection.

Just requires a little skill and creativity.

My Pro IV, photoshopped 'bird image from my '77, laser printed on clear vinyl, hand cut guard. I sent Larry the 'bird file, not sure if he's still doing die cut logos.

Thanks Carlo, I thought that had done this, just wasn't 100% sure.

Anyone ever done a written comparison/description of the various T-Bird pickups, preferably from the same bass, (Thunderbucker, EPI Pro Bucker 760s, etc)? Some have a wide experience and are good at at describing PUs. For example:
The '60s version is thick, full and punchy.
-70s are slightly cleaner and a littler brighter. (Not correct, but I can't really tell with my '64 and '76 as the '76 always has flats
and the '64 TI AA rounds.)
-TBs are....
-Epi ProBuckers are.... (supposedly are close to the 60s version)

Seems like a good reference post to have instead of searching in various locations. Wishful thinking possibly.

Someone had started one but never finished it. Unfortunately I cannot find the link. One of the longtimers will have to provide that. We really need a FAQ.
