Thunderbird Club

I'm here to enable!
And you do it well Scott. Not only did I buy a white VP this week--my wife found and made an accepted offer on a '64 Epi Embassy (Nerd-Bird) for my Bday and Christmas and just being a great husband. I added that part, but it's only a slight exaggeration. I have to stop talking with Scott! Then again, this is working out rather well for me this week since it's raining basses. I'm also blessed with a great wife.

The Embassy seems to be in great shape. Best I've seen online or in person and best price as well. Got it from the second owner. Both kept the bass is wonderful shape. Even the case looks only a few years old. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like. Hopefully as good as the two I in played Nashville last weekend. Now to consider selling something...

Picked up an Epiphone Thunderbird today because I was looking for a dual humbucker bass to go with my P and my J, just for something different. Really like the tones out of it and the neck is super comfortable.

godofthunder59, THANK YOU FOR THE POST!, I was able to get one...

Felix, I'm happy to add you to the club if you like, I did note the other photo you posted a few pages back.

It could be the start of something, an Epiphone Vintage Pro maybe? In any case please be welcome here, I'm happy to add you to the club if you like - we're more than happy to help you spend some more money on Thunderbirds.

Man, that was a tempting chance. I've been hot to get a VP but an ebony 2018 for not much more...

But the truth is I'm a huge fan of the chrome pickups and 2-piece bridge so there it is.

You know you want one! :woot:

Some nice grain on that one!

If you're like many here (myself included) you'll end up playing the Jazz less and less and even the mighty Precision may start to take a bit of a backseat. I've only been playing Birds for a couple of years (mostly Fenders before that) and today I actually contemplated putting my Fender Jazz in long term storage (case in closet) vs the easy to reach Guitar stand it's currently in.

If you're not already a club member here, be sure to get a number and join the fun!

So I walked into the local guitar shop today, picking up a speaker cable for my Marshall, take a peak around, and what should I see but a full Acoustic 360 rig, head and two cabs. Cabs are a bit worse for wear, missing the screens and blue, some ratty tolex, but the head was pretty clean. So I ask the guy at the counter about it, who I actually met a month back at a studio party, and he says it's fully up to spec, was serviced before coming in, apparently was possibly briefly owned by Steve Harris but not used. He's good friends with the guitar player in my band Dream Phases, so he says with the friend discount, $2000. I need another amp like a hole in the head, but damn, a FULL 360 rig, combine with the Sunns? I need to sell my 1200s anyhow, and might put it towards partial trade. Thoughts? @Gaolee ?

Sure, I’ll take a number. Thanks!

Well it’s more versatile than the P and has more punch and low end than the Jazz. I’m sure one will become my favorite, we shall see.

Where’s the K girl? Got some bling for her.

It looks ok except for the switch cavity being exposed with a clear cover. Not acceptable as a solution to having a switch there. Besides, wouldn't a player be hitting that switch as they strum? No, wouldn't get past my gate...

Replacing tolex is not a big deal. And of course you need it. That is the inevitable and also true answer. As long as we are discussing it, I probably need another cabinet, just because. And another hole in the head. We all need those. 2k is a pretty decent price for the preamp and two cabinets. Run that full rig and the Sunn, and you will perform sonic surgery on the audience even at low volumes. It would be raw sonic bliss for a bass player.

Looks like you were able to get the raised center section off, more or less. Now its just a matter of carefully cleaning up any center section wood that stuck to the body, filling any significant body voids with wood putty, block sanding it flat and installing whatever material raised top you want.

One of the newer club members has a black TBird with a stained wood center section that looks awesome, I think there's a picture of it about a dozen pages back. IIRC he got that look by painting the wings of a stained bird black and leaving the center block stained. It's a different way of getting the same look on a bird that has a solid center block vs the glued on raised center block. Very cool and unique look.

I was thinking something similar. The centre block split when taking it up where you have those thin shreds. I have already cut into the neck and shave it down to allow it to sit in the pocket with a raised centre bit, although I may be able to do without.

I may just re-attach the neck and bridge centre piece and leave the middle alone - who knows, will have a play today, some of it will depend how nice the wood looks on its own.

I may as you mentioned before huger an entirely new centre piece made!
