Thunderbird Club

That sucks.

People lament the loss of the local <insert type of good> store and the hollowing out of main/high street and the dearth of retailers there and in the same breathe praise the low service, low price online retailer or big box store.

Why are there no local music stores in your town? because you and your bandmates look and try there but buy from Sweetwater or some other online retailer to save a couple of bucks. If you are going to try stuff out, you owe that store the sale; that store did the work.

I go through the same with people that complain about airline service. They shop online for the best price and then complain that there is no food service, costs to check a bag etc.

There is no free lunch. What is wrong with people that they think that there is?

It's known as the slippery slope. Everybody's doin' it - so it's ok.

Don't do it. Buy another (white) bird. Did you expect some other answer?

And being that it is sarcasm Friday*: Is it racist to play a white thunderbird if you also have a black one?

* I'm trying to invent sarcasm Friday; give a bird brother a hand...

not off to a good start...

I’ve posted many pics of my buddy’s bike shop where one of my bands rehearses. Best bike shop in Nashville. Sadly, after 20 years, he was forced to close up shop. Too many folks coming in for hours asking for his advice and expertise, only to order what he recommended online to save a couple bucks. Very sad day. We had a party of sorts tonight to help sell off remaining inventory and celebrate the shop. Played a sort set too. RIP Gran Fondo.

Liking the fact that you gave the shop a wake. Not liking the fact that the internet killed it.

Pretty much knew you’ll say that. Thought I’d ask anyway.

No, but you need several other colors to be inclusive. What do you think you are, a country club?

(Stupid typos on my phone... edit:)
Just dipping my toe in the water! Lol, yep, got a nip!

Anyway my bass is 'burst, though I had a black one. That was nice too, though I went too far and lost it.

I get the feeling you’re a handy dude, so if anyone can do it you can. There are many videos on YouTube.

spray paint guitar - YouTube
I probably won't do it- I've regretted this kind of impulse in the past! I'll sit still and see if it goes away...
Thanks for the vote of confidence though!

I take it it's the rattle can part that draws this answer, or generally the idea of a refinish?
I don't wish to devalue or "cheapen" it

Roger, I *think* you want to tinker with it, honestly though. anything you do that takes it away from stock will indeed devalue it. On the hand, a fun second bass as a project scratches the itch to tinker, you can do it at your leisure.

Projects are fun, but still I'm not ready to leather ink dye a Goth neck as Carlo instructed. Still searching for one that is mint/new and has that deep dark neck like it should.

On Reverb the outlet Chicago Music Exchange had one listed that looked promising, but soon after I realized they were using stock photos.
Epiphone Goth Thunderbird-IV Bass Pitch Black BH
To their credit they opened the box and emailed pictures. Really appreciate their efforts! I would NOT have been happy.

Beautiful neck but not on a matte black bass, IMO.

One of those small torches they use for creme brulee?

Got me, brother. To me, if someone goes to a shop, tests merchandise, gets advice, then buys it somewhere else cheaper...pretty much theft, to me

Preaching to the choir.

When I was doing a lot of photography, I used to shop at Henry's in Toronto. Prices were cheaper at B&H in NYC. I would talk to my regular sales person there and she told me that Henry's wholesale price was sometimes higher than B&H retail prices. I rarely bought from B&H (only items I couldn't get otherwise) and when they could, Henry's would give me a discount to get me into a competitive price range.

Likewise, I talk to the people at L&M. They know me. When they can, they will give me a discount. I use GC, Sweetwater etc. to know what is available, rarely to shop.
