Yeah, I really had to wonder what the safety issue was. Were they turning into SkyNet?

This is a creative bunch. Any thoughts on how feasible it would be to make some black piece of plastic, ebony, whatever, to cover this side of the pickup ring to use for a thumb rest, using the existing pickup ring screw holes so as not to make any irreversible modifications to the bass? There's a lip on the pickup ring, but it's low enough to the body that there's too much a stretch for me. This is all assuming that lowering the action doesn't bring the strings more within reach. @JIO ? Anyone else?

I have an amusing story (for another time) about the movie Bullitt and Siri...
When I lived in Silicon Valley and people were visiting, I would often take them for a drive around San Francisco. Often, people think that Bullitt and other films/TV use careful camera angles to make the hills appear steep. But after driving a little and realizing that you really can't see the traffic past the intersection because the hill is that steep, they were rather impressed. Even more impressive, I was taking them up and down those hills in my car with a manual transmission.
I had a 5 string MM copy, nice bass.It was for a while as well as the MM copy and the Hofner copy. All well made, great players
Thanks! I was checking out that site. Ideally I'd have some other exact width of the ring. We'll see.
I am partial to Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings. They seem to last forever, at least for me. The E and A are wound synthetic. D and G on my bass are gut, but I have had wound synthetic D and G strings on it in the past. Evahs are outstanding.
A piece of plastic that's cut or shaped like a shelf, so there's a narrow profile where the screws go, and the profile widens toward the top, where your thumb rests. This is a creative bunch. In the untold, unrelated story.Where does Siri come in?
Well, it did say 1975.

San Francisco is a very walkable city. It is only 7mi x 7mi. And a heck of a good workout walking around because of the hills.I missed the "for another time" the first time around.
In my naivete, I always assumed that SF geography was just like it's depicted in the movies. Turns out, it is.
Yeah, the cool kids do that. I'm not a cool kid.Evah Pirazzi cello strings are steel core according to the Pirastro website, but the bass strings are synthetic core ... that's unexpected. Went for the convenience and cost saving of a set, instead of mixing and matching like all the cool tenor/bass instrument kids do.
Thanks, but I'd really rather not mess with anything existing. I don't mind spending a bit to do it right. Either way, I'll wait until I get it back from Mas Hino properly set up before I attempt anything. It's possible it will end up being usable as-is.A piece of plastic that's cut or shaped like a shelf, so there's a narrow profile where the screws go, and the profile widens toward the top, where your thumb rests.
You could actually fashion one out of two part Epoxy paste, like JB Weld or similar.
Can you sacrifice the pickup ring?

The Zero Mod concept is great, maybe you can develop that idea. Make a new pickup ring that has a thumb-rest jig molded to it, something like that. Thanks, but I'd really rather not mess with anything existing. I don't mind spending a bit to do it right. This! That would be ideal. Would be great to be able to make a pickup ring with the thumb rest integrated. I am not talented enough to make such a thing unfortunately.
I hear you. I don't want to do it to this bass, though. The Zero Mod concept is great, maybe you can develop that idea. Make a new pickup ring that has a thumb-rest jig molded to it, something like that.
I realize that I'm the guy who doesn't mind drilling a hole into his bass, supergluing a carved piece of wood onto the face of his instrument for a thumbrest... lol.
Bad ideas and destruction. Plus cars. What you shouldn't do with an ill-handling 1960s muscle car.
