Yep, this one was all about saving money, until people died and utilities got sued. Then it switched to a position of "we'll show you who's in control" - off with your power! I can't wait until they raise the electric rates to compensate for the days they make no revenue while the power is off, I'm sure it'll be the next shoe to drop.
First world problems - just restrung my 2015 THUNDERBIRD with the extra heavy Taper Black Beauties but without power I can't play the bass to see how it sounds and to complete the setup.

Very logical design engineering - just replicate one thing many times. The logistics of building the thing are a problem for the production engineer to work out.
They built some amazing electromechanical stuff back then. Ever see the Strowger switches in the old telco COs?
