Thunderbird Club

Gibson used to use Grover tuners, but in recent years they use their own (?) non stamped ones. Quality wise they are fine as any of our owners of new Gibsons can tell you. That bass is probably N.O.S. at that price, like most Gibson basses it'll need a set up when you get it. The 3 point bridge is not everyone's joy (tho I love mine) and I would suggest taking it to a good luthier if you purchase it. Otherwise, they are fantastic basses with very slim necks and like any two pick up bass they are versitle tonally, kinda mid rangy, like a Rick. For me, there are basses, then there are Thunderbirds :)
The 3-points not THAT hard to set up. I dislike the bridge, but it's for its use of flat-head bolts and putting the intonation screws in a stupid spot.
I set mine up by slamming all 3 bolts down to body level & then raising them slowly until buzzing was gone (making sure to raise the front post higher than the rear posts for a better break angle). I then set intonation, which is a PITA because the screws are under the strings. -_-

Next month, I'll be putting a Supertone on it. :P

This is during my transition from Marshall to Hiwatt. The DR201 is the same as the one in the other picture. The Bass 100 is a different amp than the DR103. The Bass 100 is rather dubious built from parts by a employee of Hiwatt during the Fane era after Dave Reeves death. My DR103 is a Bicrown era model last of the real Hiwatts.

I really dig the look of this rig - very massive! :)

What kinda cab is the one below the amps? Never seen one of those...

Speaking of the 3-point, I kind of like the design. It's adjustable without tools (if you don't mind loosening and tightening the strings a few times), the strings themselves are easily removed without scratching the body or damaging the windings, and they're kept at a consistent height relative to each other (something I try to do on my basses anyway). The only real flaw I've seen is that when using strings with silks, the silks will rest on the saddles...but I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys so that's a non-issue for me. If it was an issue, perhaps I decided to use a string with silks and could perceive a difference in tone because of it, I'd probably just use a mod bar rather than replace the entire bridge.

I like being a conversation starter, so here's an interesting one...

I like being a conversation starter, so here's an interesting one...

What other basses do you own which aren't Thunderbirds?

View attachment 435392

This is my Jackson JS3V.
I regret buying this, I believe that I'm a Thunderbirdist, so I am going to harvest it's organs and put them in a Thunderbird, as it actually sounds okay... So aye, show me your other basses!

I think what you want see is what I cheat on my Thunderbirds with..................

Probably not what you'd expect, a Washburn AB-20, I've had it for at least 15 years, it's a very fun bass!
thunderbirds029.jpg

FWIW Prince Liam I'd leave the Jackson alone, it's worth more as it is, you can always use it as trade fodder

I also currently have a "visitor" in the form of this Gibson Hollowbody, it's owner resides in Germany and will pick it up from me later this year when he visits the West Coast (Best Coast!), it will become part of an incredible collection of Gibson basses - well over 100 basses. But that's another story

You are in Big Time Sir!
Very nice Alpine White Epiphone Classic, they're certainly proving to be popular here with our membership!
Welcome to the Thunderbird Club, we like to think it's the best place to be on Talkbass, your #455 here, when you're ready for those new strings be sure to post the question here as to what we all like.

I'm probably gonna put some GHS Bass Boomers or maybe even some flatwounds. I'm still deciding.

Ok, I'll play.

Last September I bought a used Ibanez 300DX to launch myself into bass playing and the guy threw in the Crate amp. I haven't taken it out to play this month and probably won't. I remember feeling as if I was plucking the strings of a "toy" bass the last time I played her. There's just no comparison to my TBirds' tone, build quality and overall feel.

There is one thing I do miss though and that's the 24 easy to reach frets.

2014 Fender Modern Player Jazz Bass Satin (Black & Maple) - Trying to offload this one to free up funds...love how it plays, though.
2006 Spector ReBop 5DLX - Not gelling with this one since having some neck work done.
1996 Fender MIM Precision - My first bass. Currently in pieces. ^_^

Could I get a number? Just picked this up today.

Copy-cat :P

I've Been trying to trade it for a 5 string Thunderbird but the Used Buy/sell/trade here in the UK is rubbish, my queen, anyway I like the sound of this bass, and a Thunderbird body with those electronics would be to my liking... Who knows, unless a White Classic Pro or a Pro V come along, that's my idea

In regards to our prince, i'll show and tell. I own a few variety of basses. As such, i have two precision copy basses (black/maple & white/rosewood) my main was the black one until the white one was finished it's assembly. The white is now my main, i also have a logical rickenbacker bass copy gift from my dad a few years ago. Still has factory strings on it after 3 years and then there's my thunderbird of course. It's grown on me, but has always been the one i've regretted buying the most because back then, i was young, and just wanted a bird for kicks so i spent all my money on it. Eventually, after all it's mods and breaks. it's a part of me like none other. It just growls right.

In other news related to my thunderbird, i've taken on the task of building my own case for it. Since the thunderbird has broke and mended, and i don't particularly have much cash to spend on a rectangular (boring) case for it, i'm givving it it's own coffin. Indeed a coffin case build. IT's 56.5 inches long, probably 3ft widest point and the only reason it's that long is cause i have 2 accessory compartments. So far, i'm browsing materials but i'm aiming thi sbuild so that #1-i can carry Purdy out to jams/gigs #2, so i can use any other bass in this case as well.
