Playing with a pick is a different animal. Seems to me that when I'm very attentive and methodical, I can do it for a while. And then a fit of needing to run, or something, begins bubbling to the surface and I drop the thing- just let go of it. To hang onto it is to allow it's limitation to be the rule.

Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, as limitations tend to lead to creative solutions... I'm getting there. You can get a different sound, etc with a pick, and I do want to explore that. It just means giving something up that I'm used to... Leaving the comfort zone. Since playing bass is my one absolute freedom cage, as it were, well it's just a nit's hair short of a sacrifice. But this is an adventure, isn't it?

Just musing.

Annnnnnd, back to work! :)

Yes it is :).

Im considering putting a thunderbird pup in my Epi bird. Have any of you done that? What were your results?
Well, I did a couple times. Did it on my tokai which had Epi pups. Big difference. Just better overall. I did switch to EMG TBP & TBJ only cuz I needed a P&J sound. It's easy to do using a dremmel w sanding drum, too 10 min for both.

Did it on my white on too

3 mm!? Damned that's a thick pick... I just can't play with anything over 1 mm - Preferably 0.88...
I use a 3mm Dunlap Stubby Triangle pick on those rare occasions I actually use a pick. I use a 2mm little jazz pick on the six string guitar. I like everything to be thick. (oooh, that could go into the gutter fast....)

I get enough of the angry piano with just fingers that a pick is overkill. If anything, I need to tone things down. But, that's why I have four of 'em now. It's all about having a 'Bird for every season and purpose.

Just a Chinese pickups data point here. I ordered a set from eBay (8k & 9.2k) on 1/28/2016, just received them today (2/10/2016). Didn't take as long as estimated. Well packed too.

I was planning on putting the 8k in the neck position and the 9.2k in the bridge position. Seeing as how I tend to heavily favor the neck pickup, should I switch that up?

I'm going to work on installing them tonight.

Cool. Looking forward to your impression of them after you've had them for a day or two to wring them out. As for where to put them, I'd say go for more power where you play the most. If I were putting these PUPs in one of my TBirds I'd probably go with two 9.2's and then it wouldn't matter.

I've been planning the next years ahead in my restorations & home builds for the next 3-4 years. Lots of new gear to go with the current stuff i've got now.

I need a house of my own, my room is getting to small to contain all the madness of new basses & guitars!

P.S. the Goth will rise from it's ashes on February 28th, 2016, then starts the fun of building tigerbird & my friends' RD bass.

Paul Simonon of The Clash is pictured on the cover of London Calling in mid-stroke of slamming his now-Vinty old P-Bass to the stage floor. Later he was recorded as being sorry he'd done it... The moment was to big and he went with it. Yep, to bad, but it made for a great photo!
There's a rather legendary Nashville record store called Grimey's. They still sell vinyl, like in the olden times. Its a ton of fun just to look through the sleeves again. They have a shirt that is based on the London Calling iconic image...except that it's a banjo, and the text is "Nashville Calling". I keep meaning to stop by there and see if they make 'em big enough for me.

@Count Bassie

So the conversation on polyurethane finishes revisited:

As an alternate to 36 grit and a belt sander, try this
Klean-Strip 1 gal. KS-3 Premium Stripper-GKS3 - The Home Depot

Supoosedly will remove poly.
Recommended to wrap in something to keep the fumes nice and close to your project (not your head)
Interesting. I am inclined to do the chemical route... It's not because of the natural predisposition to Ramones tunes...

Thanks for the forward energy there, and the buzz, as it were!

We can get a bit chatty and I feel this may have gotten passed over, were I doing this I'd follow the conventional wisdom 8K in the neck, 9K bridge, it'll be easier to eq, esp. if you use some other basses.
