Thanks Mark. My default mood is white hot fury at the moment ... but that's straying into forbidden territory. The best thing can happen from here is people realise the time for saying 'cheer up, it might never happen' has long pased.

We Went to a show last night. Starting off the new year right!
Opener was was an eighteen-year-old singer home during her semester break from Harvard. Her name is Anaí Morales; she uses the stage name Anaí Adina. Her father Juan is a well-known mariachi singer. Anaí sang songs with her dad accompanying her; some standards and a couple her dad wrote. They were joined by her two sisters and other friends for a few full on mariachi songs.
This girl can sing.
Headliner was the fabulous Los Lobos who I hadn't seen in years. They're still bringing an eclectic mix of straight ahead rock and Latino music.

For you up in Seattle, they'll be at the Triple Door on the 8th, 9th and 10th. And they'll be at the Fillmore in SF on the 11th. A fun night out.

The area considered the westernmost suburb of Sydney clocked 48.9°C today aka 120.2°F. We had a relatively mild 38°C.
My aunt lives in Bungedore, NSW. She's been hunkered down with some friends and they're safe, just keeping themselves from succumbing to cabin fever. In her email she says last Wed the air quality index in Canberra read 26x above the hazardous level.

It takes me all of about 25 seconds to do all the slapping I know. Then I go back to marginally playing bass. Just never needed to do it in any music I've done. I've slipped a "pop" in once in a while, but that's it.So at least two of us aren't slappers! And our significant others are relieved.
Any heavily percussive technique I've engaged in has been purely utilitarian, for the effect desired in a song. When it starts to become for its own sake it starts to feel brittle and empty, and I realize that technique's not my realm.
Flea can kill it...

And there are some high-tier players who go there but I'm just not buying it, like Jeff Berlin or Vail Johnson... *yawn*... being good at it doesn't mean it's groovy.
