My band has been together for 9 years, all original lineup. After 42 years of humping a bass and being in literally so many bands I've forgotten a lot them, the secret to our success is we rarely practice. If we are gigging steadily, we fix mistakes on the fly. We practice if there's been a lull in gigging and we need to blow some cobwebs off. Seriously. Not that we haven't wanted to kill each other from time to time, but since we don't see each other weekly, it helps.

Who said, a band is like a marriage to multiple partners, just no sex. That's pretty close.

Live music needs to be exactly that.

It takes me all of about 25 seconds to do all the slapping I know. Then I go back to marginally playing bass. Just never needed to do it in any music I've done. I've slipped a "pop" in once in a while, but that's it.

What's all this poppycock about "slapping" a bass? Why would anyone want to hit their basses? What did their basses do to THEM to warrant such physical abuse?

We Went to a show last night. Starting off the new year right!

Opener was was an eighteen-year-old singer home during her semester break from Harvard. Her name is Anaí Morales; she uses the stage name Anaí Adina. Her father Juan is a well-known mariachi singer. Anaí sang songs with her dad accompanying her; some standards and a couple her dad wrote. They were joined by her two sisters and other friends for a few full on mariachi songs.
This girl can sing.

Headliner was the fabulous Los Lobos who I hadn't seen in years. They're still bringing an eclectic mix of straight ahead rock and Latino music.

For you up in Seattle, they'll be at the Triple Door on the 8th, 9th and 10th. And they'll be at the Fillmore in SF on the 11th. A fun night out.

Same kinda sax I marched in the Orange Bowl Parade-many, many years ago.

Do you have much experience with the reliability of, or any thoughts on Ashdown MAG amps? I have seen a couple for decent prices so thought about getting one to try out.

Any heavily percussive technique I've engaged in has been purely utilitarian, for the effect desired in a song. When it starts to become for its own sake it starts to feel brittle and empty, and I realize that technique's not my realm.

And there are some high-tier players who go there but I'm just not buying it, like Jeff Berlin or Vail Johnson... *yawn*... being good at it doesn't mean it's groovy.

That's amazing. I can tell that my left ear is less than my right. I only noticed it when I put an earbud in my right and then my left and noticed it was not as loud. I try to go very couple years and have an ENT pull and flush out a of nasty stuff I've collected. Maybe I need to make that appt. Could be actual loss. I think 95% of my band settings I'm to the right of everything or at least the drums, exposing my left to most of the sound action.

When I was kid, there was an article in Stereo Review magazine that basically said to do that before spending money on new gear.

After some back strain lifting my SVT head in and out after my last couple of gigs I'm going to give this 6.5 pound monster a try tonight.
The new Bergantino Forte HP.
It sounds awesome in the basement with the T-Birds.Tons of headroom.
We'll see how it sounds at the gig.I haven't used it a practice with the band so I'm going in cold.
I'll report back with the results.

That's Steve Berlin, pretty much the newest member who joined in about '83. He was with The Blasters before that. He's a player. He does session work and has recorded with dozens of other artists.
