Thunderbird Club

Hi everybody!
I've been a long time lurker here, finally I decided to join the forum and my first post is here in the ultimate cool-bass club.

I'm sure I recognize a lot of you from the facebook thunderbird group, but I always wanted to "enlist" here in the club! Here's a picture of me and my t'bird in jet and gold rockin' at rehearsal.

Best regards and keep on rockin'!

(bass is a epiphone thunderbird ltd black, upgraded with gold hipshot ultralite USA tuners, babicz FCH three-point bridge and custom pickguard & truss rod cover made of gold reflective plexi; pickguard looks banana-yellow because is mirrored and I was playing in a yellow room)

Welcome. Love that bass!

And I was in love with her, Joey Heatherton and Raquel Welch. And Maryann.

Well, not liking this one bit. Very disappointing. I’m becoming an Epi fanboy with the three IVs that have come home to roost here in the past year. One would think they could do a solid for a dedicated player.

It's not Epiphone though, it's the local distributor, Australis Music which acts as the 'middle-man' between Epiphone and the retailer. Epiphone > Distributor > Retailer > Purchaser. If you need a part or whatever, you have to find the distributor and they'll tell you 'yes that is available, contact this retailer'.

Welcome! Nice Bird! Just curious. How did you install the Babicz over the Epi inserts with the flange/lip? I have an Epi Limited that I ordered a Hipshot for because I was worried that the Babicz wouldn’t be the best choice. I love Babicz. The Hipshot hasn’t arrived yet and the seller of it has been uncommunicative for two weeks (I did not order direct from Hipshot because I was “saving” $40.) Thinking I might cancel if I don’t get a response tomorrow.

Pretty happening Dude! a sns vodkatini and drove away in the DB5 after?;)...impressive mix clarity....got a compressor on the bass?..

Yes, a vodka martini - a lot of people still think gin when referring to a martini. I'm sure Robert (studio owner/engineer) had a compressor goin' on. He made the session so easy and fun for us.

Well that was totally unequivocal.

'We do not bring Epiphone spare parts into Australia, try eBay.'

Black vinyl it is then.

They honestly do not give a flying fvck. I don't expect them to crawl up my arse, but they really seem to take pleasure in telling people 'nah'.

it is really poor though. I had hoped it would improve once we got this new distribution deal.

One would expect parts availability would be a requirement to hang your shingle selling new items.
The least they could do would be to order them in from o/s when ordered by a customer. Can’t be bothered even doing that. Poor.

Dang. Sorry you're having that issue. I looked around, but the only place I found with great ratings that offered a discounted Supertone told me that Hipshot was having supplier issues and was out of stock and would be for a while. When I contacted Hipshot, they were surprised because they had them in stock. I paid their price and had it in a week. Next time I just went straight to them.

Lesson learned. Hipshot listed them in stock. I got a discount offer from a usually reliable seller, applied it, got a confirmation and then nothing. I’m pretty mellow about stuff like that. Would have preferred a Babicz, but the flange/lip on the Epi inserts had me a bit worried. Babicz was designed as OEM for the flush Gibson inserts starting in ‘15. Oh well, I’m in no hurry. I’ve got plenty of Birds to play. But I do want to get the Silverburst (which I love) set up to my specs. The 3 point just doesn’t cut it on that one.

I would like to think that Gibson is aware of such problems with distributors. Given the magnitude of the turn around, I expect it to be a lower priority and may be dependant upon contract expiration dates, so it may take a few years before you get a good/disciplined distributor. But an international manufacturer of what is ultimately a luxury good can't abide such oafishness on the part of their international distributors.

If they tolerate it from one, others will think that they too can get away with it. Reckoning will come.

Hope so. But Gibson/Epi distribution, at least here in Cali, is abysmal. Ask any dealer. Unless it’s available from Sweetwater, good luck.

Blackfoot’s Medlocke drummed for Skynyrd in the early days and now plays guitar with them...
Correct! A lot of those guys grew up together or knew each other in JAX. MH's guitarist Dave Hlubek worked at a doughnut shop with Gary Rossington. And of course there was .38 Special as well, who's bassist Larry Junstrom was the original for LS before Leon. A lot of good much from what was then a small town.

Medlocke's grandfather Shorty Medlocke was the inspiration behind Curtis Loew.
