Thunderbird Club

500 is chicken head all the way right (clockwise) and it is really gainy. I am content at 250 usually unless I want a softer sound in which case I go 50.
Mine is usually at 250. I think I’ll take off the indicator ring.

Hmmm we need a JC club within the Tbird club!

Is there a setting other than 11?

In theory, foam should apply a more even pressure, but I think that is at best a theoretical point. Both will deform over time; the springs will see the spring constant decrease over time lessening the pressure applied. Similarly, the foam will see the polymer fibres fail over time likewise decreasing the pressure exerted. To my mind, six of one, half dozen of the other. Use what you like/know.
/have.

Was just pondering how to get the JC out of the house in its case (ie not a gig bag) without 1. arms falling off, 2. a lift from someone and discovered the BackAxe (BackAxe Home Page). The Epi Bird case is prolly too clunky and long for comfort -- unless you want to be 9 feet tall.
Cool! just don't sit down suddenly onna bus.

“Springs” that are in the ‘15 are crummy blobs of silicone that are a PITA. An insult to real springs everywhere. Just another Gibson mystery like the too thin 2 cent TR cover.
Interesting. My 2015 has crummy blobs of silicone that hold the pup cover to the pup innards, but in addition to that, each pup has two springs. Well, they had two springs before I removed them.

Yes. On the white VP the neck will tilt forward if I max it out. Foam must be more on the bridge side, but I have yet to take is out and see what's going on. But to get it as high as I want the bottom of the can will pop out on the bridge side of the PU and I have to work with it to get it leveled and not floppy. The bridge PU is where I want it. The burst VP I have PUs a little lower intentionally so it's not an issue.
I set my VP up for max pup height. So the leading edge of the neck pup gap is about two credit cards thickness from the bottom of the E string when the string is depressed at the last fret. The pup face sits relatively parallel with the body but the strings follow the angle of the neck. This creates a gap at the bridge side of the neck pup which is greater than the neck side of the neck pup. I could change this with foam cut to the proper wedge shape so the strings have the same gap across the full face of the pup but then the pup would look odd. Maybe on the next string change I'll mess with the pup tilt to see how it looks and sounds but I doubt it will make a noticible change in sound.

But ... brace yourselves ... I hate cars and even worse, that would require learning to drive.

How do you feel about motorcycles? Also, out of curiosity, do you own and ride bicycles? I know one person that chooses to live their life completely by bicycle and public transportation. Nice guy if not a bit weird for Michigan since life here is so automotive-ly defined.

Much of Europe is reasonably well organized for those that want a car-free life. The states of Europe were around long before cars.

Conversely in the colonies (Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc.), the people that moved to the colonies were primarily farmers and necessarily everything was a long distance apart. This meant self-reliance due to the prohibitive economics of mass transit. So the colonies are organized around cars.

This is how my bolt on epi bird looks.
Top of pups are inline with the strings.
Bridge raised at front.
Also, I think I read here that the bridge colletes are raised on epi,s but mine seem to be recessed.

Still gotta make some pup rings but as of yet don't know what with. Might be the shiny inside of biscuit tin.

Got my '77 back from the "spa" on Saturday. The neck went wonky again so the luthier clamped it under heat to get it back in playing shape. This is the 2nd time I've had this done. After the 1st time, we talked about ripping the fingerboard off and installing some reinforcing rods, but after examining that ridiculously thin neck at the nut, he's not convinced he can get the fingerboard off without possible permanent damage to the board/neck. So.....I figure I need to plan to have it straightened once or twice a year. I've been hauling this bass around since it was new, so I can live with that.
