Thunderbird Club

The great lefty experiment has closed with neither a positive nor negative result. The lefty bass was returned to L&M this morning.

Abstract
Testing the hypothesis that a right handed bassist, suitably motivated, could learn to play lefty. The subject withdrew consent early negating the ability to form conclusions. Neither the hypothesis nor the null hypothesis could be confirmed. The experiment lacked positive and negative controls and thus would be best described as exploratory.

Discussion
Although I can hold a bass, I can't reach the lower frets nor can I tune. But, I can play some. Playing lefty because frustrating. I expected to make some reasonable progress, however just laying scales remained a challenge. Perhaps I would have done better if I had followed a curse of instruction starting at the basics. But, I couldn't stomach time in the sandbox; I was looking to be able to do something, even if simple relatively soon. It is a frustration borne of being able to do things right handed.

I suppose it is like when a golfer decides to learn to play their opposite hand. They can have widely disparate handicaps depending upon which way they are laying. I seem recall that in the 80s there was a golfer who was a pro right handed and an amateur left handed.

Conclusion
It is difficult and frustrating to learn your instrument opposite handed. But, if you have time to burn and are looking for a pointless project...
Ah, the curse of instruction...

nothing like “Classic” rear windows...
