Thunderbird Club

Oh yeah! The first amp I played through regularly was an Ampeg Portaflex. It wasn't mine, so I rented and Acoustic combo for some time before buying my first amp. Sounded good as I recall. There was a Traynor in there for a short time.

I believe there's an old clip of Johnny Winter with Tommy Shannon on bass, and he was playing through an Acoustic. Not uncommon at all during that time.
My first decent amp was an Acoustic 126 combo. I still have it and use it regularly. Or did. It is at a practice space. For what it is worth, that drum kit is the main gigging drum kit as well, provided that there is such a thing as a gig sometime in the future.

don't look now but Sweetwater has an exactly 8lb VP

...and You can't make me look!
I'm sitting here in the most sincere pumpkin patch in the world, and I know the great pumpkin will be by soon with an Epiphone NR VP Thunderbird for me. :D

Just for you. This one is the pixie dust 2001. It just has some magic that makes it even better than other Thunderbirds. And mayhem at the back wall. Staying back from that thing does not offer any protection from what it can do. One of my projects is to clean the black paint somebody put over the blue on the preamp head.View attachment 3829270 .

You can run but you can't hide. Not even a melon patch can protect you from hearing "VP, VP, VeeePeee," and seeing one even when you close your eyes. You really do need one and won't regret it at all.

The only thing I don't like is the lighter fretboard material. My white VP is newer and has that, but my burst is older and has the darker material and looks more like rosewood. Wouldn't keep me from buying it, however!
I wondered about that but, my Ebony VP looks great in person. Sweetwater's pics aren't naturally lit, things look a bit lighter than actual. I'm sure the finish isn't that orange, either.

The two VPs are on the left, obviously. You can easily tell how there is a fair amount of difference between the darkness of the fretboards. Of course the 76 isn't all that dark either.

Yeah, drastic. What strings are on those?
As you can tail I do some swapping around on the strings given the frayed silks. From Left to Right, Boomers, String Joy (nickles), TI flats and lastly, TI Superalloys on the '64. At the time of the pic I was still rotating a few strings around to see what sounded good on which bass.
