Thunderbird Club

2012 NR 'Bird has arrived! After a string swap and a scramble for tools to adjust an acorn truss nut I've never dealt with, I believe it's ready for rehearsal tomorrow. I'm pretty pumped. This is my first real Gibson and it plays/sounds like a champ! Can't wait to try it in a band setting.

Side note and unrelated to my purchase of this bass... My two guitarist both purchased Gibsons since our last practice. (A Les Paul Standard and an SG.) Gonna be a Gibson-y good time!

The pickups could be a little growlier, but that could be the old strings, and I'll do something with the electronics first.

Emg 35 size pickups, btw, so not sure what to do about upgrades without getting the chisels out... if I decide I even need/want to. . But really I paid $250cdn for it, about $200US, so I'm really not expecting the full tbird experience... But I think I need a longer strap, it begs to be slung low, lol

FWIW I'd consider replacing the pots, they're probably not all that great - Some of the guys will likely chime in with some good reccomendations. You might read back about 50 pages or so in the thread and note that some of the guys here have tried some new Thunderbird repro pickups that are very affordable at about $50.00 US. They'll fit the the HZ 35 routs with no trouble.

You can order rings with the EY pickups, as well. I found the Thunderbucker Ranch spacers very useful.
The EY equipped Gibson Bird is getting a run tonight now I more confident of the stability of the bridge pickup.

A question. All this recent pickup experimentation has got me thinking.
How much difference does the neck pickup position make in a double pickup Bird?
"Modern" T Birds appear to have the neck pickup an inch or so closer to the bridge than 60s and 70s T Birds.
I know that different model TBird pickups can be quite different tonally anyway, but has anyone got an opinion on whether the 60s/ 70s position of itself sounds different to the "modern" neck pickup position?
If so, how is it different?

Yeah, it's different. More treble...big surprise, no? I use 60s spacing on most of my basses:

For the MAX it's 'wide stance' using 63N at the neck and 66B at the bridge ThunderBuckers. With stacked pots to maximize the possibilities:

I had an hour to kill this morning so I queued it up and listened to the whole thing. Very nice, Haji! That should give your band a bit more buzz in the local music scene and maybe a little beyond! :thumbsup:

Given a choice, I would probably prefer the '60s spacing, but with HongKongBuckers, the '91 can get a really convincing '60s thump when it's played the right way. I would expect that Thunderbuckers are even more convincing, and Lulls probably are, too, but they also may be a lot more aggressive unless you roll them off a bit.

And as an aside, we are sneaking up on Lemmy!
