Thunderbird Club

Not Thunderbird related, but it is an Epiphone, and somebody asked me for an update on my Pelham Blue Jack Casady project, so here it is (finally low enough humidity to get the first poly coat on)...

OMG. Your work is stunning. I did not realize you were refinishing one in PB. I thought you were getting a blue JC but just made a mistake in the color name. Again, that looks wonderful!

I don't know Tbirdians, I'm getting close to moving the Lull T5. I know the conventional wisdom is don't, but I just don't need a 5er in my only gig band which is Classic Hard Rock, and down tuning isn't needed (superb vocalist). Although at 9 lbs, the Lull isn't heavy, my sub-8 lb Embassy's are so much easier on my 68 year old body (35 years of soccer didn't help). I would either sell upright, or trade down or up towards a Lull T4, PT4, etc., or Dingwall D-bird/D-roc. The thought of having a Lull T5 is great, but I already have 2 fantastic 5s which are hangar Queens, actually 3 if you count the LB75f, and don't need 4. Talk me in or out of it... sigh...

Let it fly to a new home. And get one of these.

I can't take credit for the craftsmanship, other than the idea and signing the check. Chicago Fret Works is doing the refinish. I dropped her off at their shop, and the pandemic literally hit a couple days later, shutting everything down...which is why the project has taken a while. Good news is that I have an Alpine White Jackbass already and an Epi VP to keep me busy (along with several various Hofner basses).
I had a Jackbass in "Chicago Blue Pearl" or "Royale Blue" (I've seen it called both), and I just didn't like it, so I sold it...looked too purple to me. When I think purple, I think Minnesota Vikings, and that makes me think "ick!" Not "ICK!!" like Green Bay Packers, but just "ick!"
Pelham Blue just drives me crazy (in a good way), and I'm a huge Foo fan, so it only seemed logical to get my red 20th Anniversary Jackbass refinished (not a fan of red at all myself).

I noticed you had the HS shaved a bit.
Someone else did that to their JC, a while back, not a cluber here, but it turned out great, like yours.
Excellent work looks like.

Good eye. Didn't have the headstock shaved, but rather had the signature taken off the headstock...never liked it. It's not nearly as bad as the signature on the headstock of a Gibson Krist Novoselic RD bass, but not to my liking. I opted for a plain black headstock, and will put a plain black trussrod cover on her to complete the look.

Got my string order today. Roto 66s and DR Pure Blues, both SS. I put the Rotos on the Gibson this evening because I wanted to go really bright to liven up the Gibson a little. They sound full, and really good at home. One thing was shocking. They weren't that bright. The slightly used Markley Blue Steels were actually brighter on the very top end than the new Rotos. I expected them to be just this side of supernova bright. The Rotos were more aggressive in the mids, which seems to sound good on the Gibson, which needs a little attitude. It's been decades since I've used Rotos, so I was expecting crazy bright and so rough you can barely stand to play them. Internet drama. They are definitely more grippy than most strings I've played, but nothing approaching the whining often heard. Really looking forward to giving them a go Sunday.

If you want crazy bright, try the Dunlop Super Bright.

I'm optimistic the Rotos might work because they sound full and are not subdued, which is needed. If I need a little more bright I've options with the amp. The Ampeg V-4BH I'll be using has an "presence" button on the back that adds some sparkle if needed, in addition to the other typical Ampeg options.

The Dunlops, in my experience, are not full. I hated them. Very bright and very full are what I use, the SIT Power Steel.

What happens Sunday?

Have you tried the Dunlop Marcus Miller strings? They are supposed to be bright and full.
