Thunderbird Club

On all my Gibson TBirds (maybe true with Eppi as well but I don't recall for sure) the volume knob takes on a second personality when turned to 9 or higher. It essentially overrides the tone knob setting and goes bright. My new Greco bird doesn't do that. The volume knob just increases/decreases volume without any noticeable impact on tone.

For that very reason I rarely turn any of my Gibby birds up past 8 on volume, tone knob is usually at 5 or less. If I go 9 or higher on volume it really doesn't matter much what my tone is set at, it's gonna get a lot brighter, specifically in the high mids.

I have an Epiphone Thunderbird and if I dial all the knobs to max, the highs are very bright and that’s not my preferred sound.

My “at home” standard is to set the neck pickup to 8. That’s the first point where the low end doesn’t make my amp buzz at me like an angry wasp, so I leave it there, which is the perfect balance point for my sound. Bridge pick up is dial in at 6, which just gives my ear the most pleasing results and I blend it all together with the tone at 3. I get the sound I’m shooting for from the bass and the amp EQ is generally flat, maybe a tiny bass boost to 12:30 but I like what I’m hearing.

For anyone interested, here is a link to a video I just finished editing comparing my newly acquired used Vintage Pro and a TB IV I purchased new last year. Fresh strings and setups.

Not sure if I can post the video here since my channel is marked for adults only and requires one to log into youstupid, I mean tube. I have a few videos that have explicit content from my 2nd EP where I tried my hand at mixing vocals, not singing since I can't carry a tune, just the usual froggy gargle vocals of mediocre metal :/

Well, looks like it did post, I guess we'll see what happens.

Great! Will give a good listen later.
