Thunderbird Club

They are a string I really want to try. Most of my basses have flats, GHS Pressureworunds or something not very bright. As I've acquired more Thunderbirds I've begun to explore brighter strings and am finding some interest there. The problem I'm running into is I'm finding a good many strings I'm liking, but don't have enough basses to put them on.:banghead:
Suggestions on how to remedy this problem?
Nope no suggestions about that problem. You are on your own.

Well, recall I was looking for some dark flats and bright rounds to try on the BaCH to see how it would respond. I picked up some Chromes at GC, which IIRC are a relatively dark sounding flat. Pulled the Black Beauties off the BaCH and installed the Chromes (105-50's).

Initial Observations:
1) Glad I didn't try these on the VP, I'm not so sure the G string would have reached the tuning peg. On the BaCH I just barely got one wrap around the post.

2) These strings are a much higher tension than the Black Beauty Heavy gauge taperwounds. I had to put a half turn of additional back bow in the neck to get the action back down to around 3/32". We'll see if it holds or if I need to make further adjustments tomorrow.

3) Might just be because they are new, but they seem a bit more grippy than Roto flats I have on other basses.

4) They are indeed nice and dark sounding. As brand new strings that might be a problem since they will most likely get darker as they break in.

5) With the volume maxed (regardless of tone setting) the strings have a wonderful deep buzz saw growl about them. Not gritty or harsh, but a very nice overdriven rumble that should play well in many rock settings. Back the volume off a couple notches and turn up the tone knob for a well mannered piano like tone.

6) I like these much more than the Black Beauties on this bass. And much much better than the strings that came with it (not positive but I'd guess they were nickel rounds). I'm less inclined to replace the stock pup at this point, but let's see how things go before ruling that out.

Seems like a good time to leave
Exactly the right time! Lenin actually took the train from Helsinki to StPetersburg to start his ”little revolution” in the East that year, that’s when we saw our chance.

We where a part of the Russian imperium for about 100 years, before that the current Finland was just one area of Sweden, lost to Russia after the 1808-1809 war.

Just got a called as stand-in bassist to one of my friends covers band rehearsal tonight. My Orville Bird will finally get some real work again. Now I have to check out some ”I have newer played them before songs” by ZZTop, Whitesnake, CCR and so on. Nothing really tricky though..
Enjoy. ETA: pida hauskaa

I don't think I've ever heard Chromes described as anything approaching dark before! (I found them scooped every time I tried them years ago.) But I'm glad you may be on to something. It's further encouragement for me to reconsider Chromes at some point. I'm just going to need more basses......

That's the textbook definition of a great decision!

I don't understand how anyone can find Roto 66s rough. I have a set on my bird now for the second time and I like the sound and don't have any complaints about them being rough or hard on my fingers. But cobalt flats - oh my little princess fingers...

It’s always opposite day where you are.

i liked the Gibson Thunderbird from around 2015 - with exposed pole pieces on the pickups and 2 mini switches. I'd like to see it return.

Because of it's limited production I do think those will become a more sought after bass in the future, really a versatile variation of the Thunderbird concept.
