Thunderbird Club

String update on the Gibson. As always a live setting is often so different from home, even with almost identical rigs. I tried TI flats today--Both PUs was nice, but the Cobalts still hold top place there it seems. However, with fingers the TIs still sounded good. Others often dropped way off in terms of definition. The TIs were great with just the neck! Pick or fingers. It is tempting to just turn off the bridge and go with that. I'm leaving the Sonic Maximizer on and not tweaking much of anything. I will likely go back like I did today day and retry a few more strings, but so far the Cobalts seem to have earned the top spot. Note when I tried the TIs initially w/o the Sonic Maximizer it was not good at all, so it clearly does something beneficial in my setting.

.… Sterling St. Vincent guitar with all guitar hardware has Chinese Thunderbird style bass neck now .... needs a bass bringe...(and a bridge cover) ... bass pickups too...

Seems so. But I haven't measured. The only comparison pics I have. You can see the claw is about even with the tone knob, and the same seems to true for the hipshot.

In that photo the basses look a lot closer size wise, obviously different, but the Epi doesn't seem as gigantic as in the other photo. The proportions are slightly different and the pickups and hardware are located differently, I guess Epi just went with the more modern spacing on the pickups.

Anyone customize their t-birds with different pickups if so which ones are best?

There's no one *best*, while I use Lulls in some of mine I also have some with the stock Gibson, Epiphone, Jackson or whatever in them as well. There are many fans of Thunderbucker Ranch here, and the work of Jason Lollar gets really high praise as well.

Lull + Gibson, in this case an '89.

I'll also throw the EYguitar or Chinabuckers in the ring, those are solid pickups at a great price. And the Greco pickups, though those aren't likely to crop up for sale ever.

Oh man, I've been wanting Music Man to make a bass version ever since it first came out! Love the look of that model.

I think you're right. Measurement wise, it's not that much larger. The headstock is clearly larger. The PUs on the VP: The bridge PU is closer to the bridge. On the modern Gibsons, the neck PU is closer to the neck and further from the bridge. Thus contributing to the darker sound.
