Thunderbird Club

Ok @GonePlaid or @Gaolee, here you go.
Yeah, I can't do this. But I did send a pm. I have done enough enabling that turnabout is fair play. And then the VP II turned up. That makes it hard to resist. I will have to 'fess up to my wife, since sneaking a Thunderbird into the house will not happen. She may have something to say about it since we just had a plumbing emergency in the bathroom. But... I can dream.

well , I might get a caning from some quarters, but seeing as genuine "60s Tbird IIs are very thin on the ground down under and I can't justify dropping 10 large on importing one, I guess I kinda made one.

Beautiful, inspired work!

We'd all love to hear what you did to make this fantastic Thunderbird!
Let me know if you'd to join the club, happy to add you!

I'm really hesitant about the future of live music in my area, therefore really hesitant about spending $ on another bass when I have 4(I know-piker)that hardly get played and, unlike some of y'all, I'm not interested in recording[something else for which I don't have the cash]. That said, I'd be lyin' out my as....er, teeth if I said I wasn't interested. And that ebony looks sweet. I'd prefer a II, but I gots no problem running the bridge/superfluous pup at "0".

Thankyou !
Yes I'm happy to join the club, although having said that, in the words of one G.Marx, "I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me " :D
As for the VPII, it was relatively easy.
A set of reverse wind res-o-lites, and a Gibson sticker from the local sign man.
The crash repairer filled the p/up hole and resprayed the centre section of the body.
I relocated the output jack and sourced a nickel plated bridge cover.
Made up the stand offs for the bridge cover and also the tug bar from some very hard 1/4 inch rubber sheet that was lying around the workshop.
Presto !

First coat of vinyl sealer has gone on!

Good news is it’s on. Bad news is the stewmac grain filler has left something to be desired. I used as directed, put plenty on and sanded down, but after applying the sealer, can tell it didn’t do a great job filling the grain. Probably just means an extra layer of sealer, ah well, but if I do it again I think I’d go with an oil-based filler instead of water. If the sealer doesn't take to filling what's left, I may sand down the sealer and redo some of the grain filler.

Well Done! I admit this has crossed my mind...........plus it would give me a spare pickup for a build.

Beautifully done! And while some would give you some guff about putting a Gibson TRC on it, I applaud you since you were going for a look and you nailed it!

One question though... did you put your P/Up in the 60's sweet spot?

Personally, I don't care what people put on their TRCs (unless they are purposely misrepresenting something for personal gain). In fact, I would be amused at someone putting a 7ender TRC on a Thunderbird and parading it around GP.
