Thunderbird Club

Well congratulations! So weird about the pickguards. Do you know how different they are in age and if they're of different origins of manufacturing? Sorry to tell you that they weren't actually hatched.

The new one, MiK Dec 2007. The old one?
Neck's been changed at some point, and the original neck plate wasn't reinstalled :banghead:

They sure tightened up on aircraft art. I was the crew chief of a F4D from '74-'76 (66-7487), all we could do was paint the Pilot's name, crew chief's name, and the aircraft's name on the hatch, mine was named La Chichona. The pilots, all anglos, never got it, but didn't care because I took alot of pride in her, and she was well maintained and was never a Hangar Queen (no disrespect to our illustrious Queen).

Hangar vs hanger is one of those things spelchek never catches since either is correct-or not.

Hoping the vast base of knowledge here can help out...
I'm the proud owner of an ebony '78 Gibson RD Standard bass, which is very much a first cousin to the Thunderbird bass...the body shape is similar and bridge and controls are the same (two volume, one master tone). The RD Standard is passive, without the wonky Moog circuit of the Artist model, and the newer incarnations called the Artist also have wonky active / passive electronics.
Being that she's a 42 year-old instrument, I had to do some maintenance on her...new TI flats (XL since it's through-body), three new pots, and new jack. The bridge is in good shape, but I am contemplating a Babicz so long as it will still work with the through-body.
Here's my question...
The tuning machines are in decent shape, but are old and have a little slippage here and there, so I'm thinking a nice shiny new set would be nice and tight and stay in tune.
Poking around online (1978 Gibson RD Standard Bass Guitar >> FlyGuitars) I see that the tuning machines are Schaller BM's. Any advice on the best place to order? Chrome or nickel, which makes more sense for a 42 year-old bass? I'm guessing the bridge is chrome, right? (Gibby 3-point). Are these the ones I'm after? Bass BM

Thanks for any input!

If you want to upgrade the bridge, do you really need the strings going through the body?

I’d keep it original just the way it is.

I don’t have any answers for you, but that’s a beautiful instrument!

... so only the teaser shot until I get home in the morning ;)
The suspense is agony!

I don't remember exactly, but a Gibson sticks in my head a little. You did a duke'o'frock move and put in a losing bid but won anyway, as I recall. There's an honorable tradition of doing that around here.

The board on the 2013 I was talking about looks rosewood, too. How does your sound?

Unfortunately, they're a bit far one from the other
As you may remember, I had a new 2019 made one last year, but I sold it because I had the chance to step on a brand new Precision Am.Or.60 that I really liked. But the bird's tone is really nice, and, yeah...it's freakin' cool
I expect that you will find every one you are looking at now to sound similar and feel similar. And yes, freakin' cool is the way it is. Plus, as you are discovering, once you have been chosen by Thunderbirds, you will play them and they will find you no matter what.
