Thunderbird Club

Thanks for posting. I'm not sure what drives the Gibson/Epiphone decision process on pup placement but it does have a certain randomness appearance to it.

I'm no Luthier, but I've built a few basses and to be honest I haven't really found a massive difference in the sound of pup placement within an inch or so (more than that, yes, but less, not so much). I find significantly more variability in sound from right hand placement (strumming not fretting hand).

is it wishful thinking if I suggest they change the pu placement to take account off the tonal qualities of the different pickups used ?

Maybe for full tonal capabilities, apply the "Bootsy Collins" solution...

That would certainly be a logical assumption, except a 1/8" difference in pup locations between the two Gibsons would make zero difference in sound. Even the 1/4" difference in pup locations between the two Epiphones would be completely un-noticeable sound wise.

Kinda makes me wonder if the bodies are identical in size, I suspect they're not. If not, it could possibly be chalked up to something as simple as a scaling factor. Then again, it might have just been some summer intern in the design department eyeballing it on the CAD drawing. Just one of the many unsolved mysteries of the world I guess.

When I was moving my strap buttons around, I noticed that the bodies on my bolt-on Epi IV and the GBP (a CP originally) look reasonably similar, and the external shape is almost identical...but the other dimensions? Very different, by as much as 1/2" in some cases.
The center raised section was the primary culprit; I assume a result of the differences in the way they're made (neck-through vs. bolt-on).
I couldn't transfer any of the location measurements I made from one, to the other :(

My you have developed some "strange characteristics" since you started playing drums:wacky:
My son told me I have "drummer brain" now. Not everyone thinks that playing a simple 2/4 pattern with your feet and then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 patterns up and down against that pattern while keeping to a metronome is the coolest thing to do for a half hour.

The opposable thumbs may be a temporary condition.

Indeed!! AKA "Polydextrious"
BTW your son paid you quite a compliment:thumbsup:

Hellllloooooo everybody, I'm back again, sort of! :):bassist: I joined this club and introduced myself a couple of months ago, during the first wave of the C-19 pandemic, sometime in march it was, if I'm correct. I talked about an Epi T-Bird being up for sale here in northern Norway at a very reasonable price, but I missed out on that one, due to travel regulations at the time and bad winter conditions (seller live some 100 miles away from me), resulting in the bass getting sold to someone else. But, of course ha, this was meant to be, as I found me another one one week ago, in better - almost new condition - at a totally ridiculous price..
I was with our son at the playground last sunday, killing some time before we had to pick up our daughter at a friend's place and I was just speedbrowsing ZuckBook's local sales groups in this region, when a picture flashing by caught my eye.. "Hey, is that..?.. Yes, it is! ! I just hit a pic of the T-bird logo! It was the 'main picture' of a listing for a 'bassgitar', no further specifics mentioned. Fixed price, so I immediately responded: "Yes, I'd like to buy this." (in Norwegian, of course:cool: ) Got a response via pm, gave my son acute marching orders and off we went. I was afraid someone would beat me at it, so I may have tested the speed limit a couple of times, but it was worth it.. I'll just copy-paste the text accompanying my ZuckBook post on sunday:
"* So, It didn't come with a case or a gigbag, just a lot of dust on top, what looks like factory strings and some original decals to protect the cover on the back..
But hey, no complains here when it cost me no more than the Norwegian equivalent of some €20.. Yes, twenty!

Congratulations! And you already have the strap pin at the neck heal, which is the preferred location and most people do that after the fact.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I'm really happy about this. I'd actually been feeling bad about missing out on the other axe, earlier this year, but this one here and how I got it actually made up for all the feeling bad I endured..:bassist::hyper:
