Ya that would be pretty freeky, i do t have any racing stories and my track days are short. With the two kids I just cant justify spending the money I would want to spend on gear etc.
At this point, I just commute on the bike. It's overkill to ride a Daytona as a commuter but it is better than not riding.

Riding a motorcycle in Seattle's commute is act of bravery!

Or foolishness. I consider it combat riding.

It's fun, in a fear and loathing kind of way, but I have done it for more than 20 years so it's apparently survivable. The best part is when it's raining and nasty out. I go blasting past cars and busses full of people. They are warm, dry, and generally bored and a bit out of it. I'm wet, cold, wide awake, and having a complete blast. It's hard to explain why that is so much fun. I get where I'm going wide awake and feeling all charged up and happy instead of being all sedated, road raged, and dull.

The Daytona stays under cover when it's miserable out anyway. I ride a battered Suzuki DRZ400 when it's miserable. It's a different kind of fun. It's a puppy. The Daytona is a panther.

Some texting dumpty in a lumbering dumpty pod may kill me someday. Until then, commuting is something I actually enjoy.

not sure how best to link one post to another on this site so i'll just add it to my last see if it makes sense , i've put together the photo's of the t'bird covers , i managed to trace some nickel silver sheet 2mm thick i wanted 1.5mm and 3 inches wide but couldn't get any , i rolled down the 2mm to 1.5mm ....what a pig that was , had to anneal it so many times ,nickel silver work hardens real fast, i'd made up cardboard templates of the covers from online photo's just approximated the dimensions and made them to fit my bass, the bass pickup hand rest /cover should have been a bit deeper but i just used what i had, i drew around the templates ,cut out the the covers , ground a groove in the corners to get a nice neat finish and bent into shape , i then silver soldered into the grooves at the corners, and after letting sulphuric acid remove the fire stain i filed and buffed them smooth ready for polishing, i made one side of the cover for the bass pickup shorter to allow for the thickness of the scratchplate , checked they fitted ok the Epi is slightly wider than the gibson in the raised section hence me making my own covers , i sent them off for chrome plating and got them back last week , really pleased with the end result , the nickel silver cost £20 the plating £30 + vat and postage my time was gratis , this wasn't an easy job if i could have got off the shelf covers that fit the Epi i would have done so. A few more pics from my T'bird transform , i said previously that i didn't fancy cutting the covers off the TB pickups, just in case i made some damn awful mistake and ruined one or both , i really liked the covers i'd found online http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrome-Plated-Metal-bass-pickup-cover-for-Gibson-Thunderbird-bass-guitar-/121123311405
and decided rather than take the risk i'd make some covers that just fit over the top of the pickup as they are, ok it means you have to find your optimum pickup height and stick with it as you cant adjust the height without altering the cover as well but the option of being able to return the bass to stock if i wanted seemed worth the experiment , i used silver sheet as its easy to work and i have it in stock, if you follow the pics you'll see its fairly straight forward the only tricky bit was getting the radius on the edges, it was worth the effort , they fit well and have made no difference to the tone that i can hear , the silver is a softer white than the chrome and it shows up polishing marks which have kind of added to the vintage used look on them, you can also see from the pics i left the original black bridge fixing points in the body , its not that noticeable with the bridge in situ, a load of work but its made the project great fun IMAG2242.jpg IMAG2243.jpgIMAG2244.jpg IMAG2245.jpg IMAG2246.jpg IMAG2248.jpg IMAG2247.jpg IMAG2250.jpg IMAG2252.jpg i'll post the links to some of the suppliers i've used in a later post

I think that would be beyond most of us, that is skilful work, I think if I tried it they would end up the size of a triangular tobacco tin and holes all over them where the silver had melted when trying to solder them together.

Did they make any difference to the tone at all?

i tried with the cover on and off,and no difference , the only noticeable thing was when playing if your plec or nail hits the plastic you dont hear anything ,but off the silver cover you get a slight percussive click , so if you are a heavy fingered so and so like me its best not to follow through ....that sounded a tad pornographic but i think you get my drift , i suppose if i had epoxied or wax loaded them it might have acted as a deadener , its not obvious and when i rehearsed on wednesday night at full tilt volume wise i didnt really hear anything irritating other than the odd Zb

Cool, It's a shame the ones on ebay don't fit the plastic covered pups, I guess there could be a small market for your silver ones, a bit pricey when you factor in your overheads etc but there isn't much coice and they do look superb

i think they could be made from nickel silver quite cheaply materials wise ,but you're right its the time to hand make that's the problem its tricky, if the were just flat topped and sharp edged then it would be quicker ,and i think if the were nickel they would be more robust and there must be a way of winding down the pick up whilst the cover stays in situ , its a bit of a brain teaser

Nice to meet @veebass yesterday. It was good to hear the Goth in other hands.

The action feels a bit better now after a bit of manipulation but with no truss rod adjustment as yet.

Though that was not the plan.

I bought a pack of Allen keys and a rachet screwdriver with multiple heads including Allen keys thinking I'd be covered... And of course none of them fitted the Goths trussrod :) so it isn't 4.0mm or 5.0m; I'm guessing it is either 4.5mm or could it be an Imperial size? I assumed metric as I think the Goths were a China build.

Anyone know for sure?

Yeah, it's gotta be metric. Stripped 4mm perhaps?

It larger than 4.0 and smaller than 5.0 ; both sets I bought excluded 4.5 though most other n.5's were covered (of course!).
I think I'll be looking for a 4.5mm.

Having said that the comment was made that the nut could do with a file as the strings looked a bit high. The strings are 45-65-85-105, which I thought was quite a standard size. Or do most of you stick to 100 E strings on the Epiphone bolt-ons?

I believe 4mm is pretty standard, but there's always exceptions. Never seen a 4.5mm hex key.
I'm sure someone here that has a goth will confirm.

And yeah, 105 is also pretty standard (as is 100 depending on your taste)

But really, the string gauge is irrelevant to nut height, the bottom is the bottom, so if the nut slot is too high, it doesn't matter what gauge the string is.

Get a set of imperial ones, too? The tool kit I got as a present upon going off to college included both. Usually there will be an imperial size somewhere between two metrics and vice versa that will be a close enough fit.

I use a 100 E, both on my EADG tuned basses and my BEAD tuned basses.

Thought I'd add my 2015 Thunderbird. Modded to nickel hardware and Thunderbucker Ranch '63s. Here's a photo with its older brother.
