always wondered what bass was used to record “Gimme Three Steps”....was that even Leon or was it Ed? Doesn’t get much better than that tone right there....
I have found some for sale, but located in Japan, so a bit expensive with shipping. I'll just continue to look for a beat up Greco IV bird that I can yank the pups out of if I want.Thanks. Another great review.
Wonder how difficult the Greco PUs are to find? I could search, but...
Ed played everything (bass) on the first LP as far as I know.always wondered what bass was used to record “Gimme Three Steps”....was that even Leon or was it Ed? Doesn’t get much better than that tone right there....

yep, not surprised, although I love that tone for THAT song, the playing very much sounds (to me) like it was recorded by a great guitarist, not a bassist...Ed played everything (bass) on the first LP as far as I know.
I always liked Gimme Back My Bullets. Kind of raw and edgy but still massive. I think Street Survivors was pretty close to Leon's bass live. Huge, massive low-end, earth-shaking. Perfect for that many instruments. Clearly he was not trying to "cut through" anything.
Yes it does. Ed said he tried to play what Leon did, but it likely sounded as much like Ed as Leon. I once told a talented guitar player who often played bass that I could almost always tell if a bass player was a guitar player playing bass, and he seemed shocked and offended. When he played bass was more like an extended lead in many ways and not really getting in the pocket as a bass should. He was busy like a guitar player not busy like a bass player. Very talented guy, even played piano and drums.yep, not surprised, although I love that tone for THAT song, the playing very much sounds (to me) like it was recorded by a great guitarist, not a bassist...
Drummer. Just saying.Had a drummer say he thought my white wold look cool with gold hardware. At first I thought it would be gaudy, but the gold knobs do look good. Can you have too much of a good thing?
My favorite of theirs. Gritty and unceremonious.Ed played everything (bass) on the first LP as far as I know.

Do I need a Greco?
So he was a cocktail jazz trio.Yes it does. Ed said he tried to play what Leon did, but it likely sounded as much like Ed as Leon. You and me, both.Sucker that I am, I would have paid way more.
Ed King did all the first album bass work, or stinking close to it. The whole album is still some of my favorite studio music.always wondered what bass was used to record “Gimme Three Steps”....was that even Leon or was it Ed? Doesn’t get much better than that tone right there....
