P-38s are beautiful, but I think P-47 pilots had a longer life expectancy.B model Mustang, way cool!
I guess the '38 really didn't work so well at high altitude over Europe for a multitude of reasons, much better in the Med and Pacific. The '47 is just a flying brick %^$#&*(@!

Yep....always thought a 38 with twin Merlins would have made a formidable piece of kit...B model Mustang, way cool!

I'm late catching up, but YES! Several flats sound fantastic on Thunderbirds. Of course it all depends on the tone being sought and the rig being used. I find TIs sound really good, Cobalts sound good as well. Roto 77 flats are another great option. They provide some thump but also a little something modern. Fender Flats should be nice on a VP, but I don't think I've tried those on mine. I like the VPs so much I have two. One will likely end up with flats again before long. As for the VPs--fantastic basses. Great deal even at list price as far as I'm concerned. They sound really close to the 60s versions. I'm fortunate enough to have one of those as well.Hello everyone!!!
I recently got my hands on a beautiful epi EB-3, and I have been drifting more and more to that type of sound, and leaving my comfort zone (P bass and MM style). Because of that I have been thinking about getting an Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro , I think that right now they are called Epiphone Thunderbird 60's, but I am a die hard flats fan, would a Thunderbird work fine with flats ? Or, due to it's classic sound be to muddy to even sound good ? Anyone here rocking Thunderbirds with flats, and if so, which brand??
PS: Played the white one yesterday (with some rounds) and absolutely loved the feeling, but thinking about the classic sunburst, by far one of the most beautiful basses I have ever seen!
Thank you all.
Hey, I resemble that remark!Lots of us play VPs with flats! I've been happy with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats on 4 different Epi birds, including the VP. There are a few other preferences here as well, especially amongst the members of the Princess Fingers Club (a sub-club comprised of those who are allergic to motorcycles and EBCF, so they play other flats and ride twin turbo scooters instead of actual motorcycles).
That would me be with burst, which has a backward crack, thus the strings keep is nice and tight. Most headstock breaks are repairable with no effect on the sound or playability. IIRC there’s a couple of members here that bought a VP or Embassy with a broken headstock for the hardware, gave the repair a try and kept the bass intact.

Sometimes you can keep playing till you get it fixed. Either way the glue/bond is much stronger than the string pull on a simple break repair. That would me be with burst, which has a backward crack, thus the strings keep is nice and tight.
Luis,
Your finger style technique is something to envy! I find it interesting that you seem to favor your middle finger over the index, agai, well done!
