Thunderbird Club

Hmm, not only does he play with trains, looks like he's a bit of a gardener too, all the cred is rapidly going out through the window!! What next, a Victoria sponge?

I'm not so much a baker (had to look up Victoria Sponge) , but I can def cook very well.

Reading some other threads on TB, jeez there's some snobbery going on with basses, with Fender especially. The good thing about this little bit of TB is it's open mindedness to other forms of the club's title i.e. Thunderbirds; as long as the shape is something like it's welcome and praised, no "it's an Epi not a Gibson therefore not as good blah blah....". It really is refreshing to see this where owners of the pukka instrument are more than enthusiastic of the "version" model or a copy type instrument. I'm sure it's been said before here but I just wanted to say it
Mine's an Epi, not a Gibson, and don't you forget it! No, seriously, I actually seem to prefer Epi necks over Gibson ones. Not saying they're better, just that they seem to fit my left hand more.

I like how everybody treats the Fender Precision like its the best bass in the world and that if you dont agree you are not worthy of inhabiting the Earth and yet its not even the best P bass on the market, let alone the best bass ever
A while ago when someone was asking what the best Precision Bass on the market was, IIRC, I kicked the beehive a bit by posting a picture of a Rickenbacker 4000 (single pickup model).

I am lucky enough to have quite a few basses (north of twenty) and actually and about half of them are Fenders, so I am definitely not a one brand fan boi. Most are Fenders and Gibsons, but I have G&L, Rickenbacker, Greco and Ibanez basses as well.
I've got several very good Fender P basses (probably better P Basses than many of the people you are referring to) and even a few Jazzes , but if I am looking for the "classic" P Bass sound I will generally use my Greco TB II. It does it better IMO, as do Gibson Victorys.
I actually prefer single coil P Basses to the split coil ones and Telecaster Basses look so much cooler anyway. I love my CBS Fenders as much as my preCBS ones. I don't have a single bass with a Tort guard. I don't particularly like flats. I don't whine like a baby when a bass weighs more than 8.5 lbs. I don't believe neck dive is a fatal condition.
I prefer RD Standards to Jazz Basses and G3s to Rics.
So you can see how I can get into issues in the general population.
It's not that I don't think Fender Ps are good basses. But I find I can get a sound that's not far off the mark that actually works better for what I do, with other basses.

I really can't remember how my Gibson's neck felt but the Epi classic is a delight, I'd almost go as far as saying it's the nicest bass I've ever played. That probably isn't true but it's not far from it, if it had a nitro finish then it would be, then of course the tuners but hey it cost pocket money

This version of the Dean looks nice but I sure wouldn't pay the $2500 they were asking for it.

Here is a link to the listing. Custom one-off or not I wouldn't pay that.

Dean John Entwistle Hybrid 2014 Trans Blue Flame Bass Guitar

Money better spent on a Cataldo IMHO... ;)

Never been able to get on with Ps (more particularly their necks) and Js sound a bit rinky dink to my ears. That said I occasionally look at the Squier Australia site to see if anything appeals, but anything in a colour and configuration I would consider always seems to have a maple fretboard. The closest to a P I expect to get is an Eastwood EEB-1 (maybe at some point).

I was talking to the bass player that backs a friend of mine, who's a country singer in Nashville. His J bass is a Sadowsky. He was telling me that somebody not too long ago was givin' him crap for not having a "real" bass. Bumper makes a decent instrument, and its sort of the gold standard, but...damn, they're pedestrian.

To those with Epi Classics; I really like on the Pro the look of the neck slices (?) being visible.
All the photos of Classics in VSP I've seen don't seem to display the 7 layers. (I realise the white one doesn't display them :))

So can you see the layers ?
Yes but there are 9 layers on the classic not 7

Excuse the shot on the bed but at least it's made, no way I'm getting my arse spanked publicly. Excuse the sheets too, missus chose them
