I've always liked it too. My first amps, in the 90s, were Peaveys. Very happy with this one too
The grill is made that way because, technically, it's a tiltback amp - it's just internal, so the cabinet can sit flat.

Very cool design. Peavey used to make killer amps, glad to see their stuff going around again. My brother still something like this, dates back to the early 80s.

Of all the TBirds I've owned and played, I've never actually played or heard one of the active ones. How do you like it? I assume it's a fair departure from your VP birds, is that correct?
Love or hate the sound, there's one thing everyone agrees on when it comes to vintage Peavey combos - they are indestructible! Peavey and cockroaches will be all that's left after a nuclear holocaust.

I have often been more than mildly impressed with the tone and solid delivery of Peavey amplification.
It is: that sound, that thing, that makes the Vintage Pro sound like the original 60's 'birds - the active Pro doesn't have that.
Still sounds like a Thunderbird, but the more modern ones, like my Classic Pro. But with more tonal variety, both high & low.
A lot of reviews & videos I've seen complain that the pre-amp is terrible. It took a while to grok what was going on with it, but it seems to have less overall range than some pre-amps, and doesn't really do "extreme" sounds one way or t'other. Just adds flavor to the sound.
Most of the diversity comes from the pickup blend.
(which I am not a fan of on any bass, I'd rather have two vols)

Right now, I've found a good place for the settings, where it works fantastic with the amp and the Triple Shot
Fantastic and much overlooked song, both musically and lyrically. The music is moving and the words tell a relatable story that one doesn't have to guess, wonder or take pharmaceuticals to try to discern the meaning.
Not mine, but this was my main rock rig for years in the early 80s. Sounded really good.

Does everything I need it to, let's me make the sounds I want to, and weighs, according to Peavey, just a touch over 44lbs., so easy enough to move around
