Thunderbird Club

Gig went well….baking up in the mountains yesterday…..unruly, rowdy, biker action…..must have been the heat and jaeger bombs…
rig sounded phenomenal, being an open mic people get up and play your rig giving you the option to listen to it away from the stage…..generally, people bring their basses but there’s a
Prima Donna lurking these parts that didn’t, and wanted to play one of mine (don’t like that unless it’s a friend)….when I asked him which one, he looked at me as if the TBird wasn’t even there (mind you, it’s the bass I was wearing when he came up)…..couldn’t believe his disdain…..almost hissed at the Greco…..:banghead:
all in all a good time…. both basses sounded phenomenal but I realize over and over that the more I play a single pup bass the more I prefer a bridge pup as well…….just me I guess…..

I'da tole him "sorry, I don't let anyone play(the other bass)." See what he'd say. Although I'm not sure we'd wanna convert a (jerk) like that.

I agree with Chuck. I don't care for others playing most of my basses (if I don't know them) or even using my tube heads for that matter). I would have said "you can play the Fender," when he asked. Any rare Thunderbird Gibson or not would be off limits. There's also that whole neck dive and headstock flying off thing that Thunderbird amateurs aren't ready for yet.

Or you could pick up POS pawn shop special with 1/4" action for _____'s like this.

Going tomorrow to take a look at this, a 1990 Gibby. He says it is in almost mint condition. Currently set up and tuned down one step down, he did not remember the brand of the strings.
He is asking 1200 € for it, what do you guys think, a good deal?

It looks in good shape! But what's up with the no screws in the pickguard?

Edit: forget it, they're probably black and I can't see them

Early years of the re-issue are really good Birds! The pickups are likely NOT the later ceramic magnet types and the have a very shallow neck pitch. Check it out!

Converting to US Dollars seems a tad high (roughly $1,410), but that's likely not a good way to consider it. What a thing goes for in one location may vary a fair amount. Question: Do you like the way modern Gibson's sound and that's why you are interested? If so, great. But others can comment on various PUs used by Gibson's. Seems like a great bass and no doubt plays like a dream. My '06 plays as wonderful as anything I've owned. My point being is they don't sound vintage and have their own sound/flavor, so if that's what you're shooting for you could be disappointed. (I prefer the vintage tone of VPs myself having owned a '64 for decades. But if you like the more modern tone, you'll likely have a wonderful instrument.

EDIT: I see V mentioned the kind of PU used. Sounds like it would be a great bass well worth taking a look at!

I think if it truly is in almost mint condition and the neck is straight, the TR works and it hasn't been broken and repaired, that is a really good price. I'm thinking there aren't a lot of those to choose from in Finland. I bet it plays great. Unless you find something you don't like about it, go for it!

Your story about the Prima Donna reminds my of the time I had another bass player tell me my Casady’s tone wasn’t good and EMG actives were the way to go.
