Going tomorrow to take a look at this, a 1990 Gibby. He says it is in almost mint condition. Currently set up and tuned down one step down, he did not remember the brand of the strings.
He is asking 1200 € for it, what do you guys think, a good deal?

Ah, yes. But I ignore them. The metric people are all laughing at us.

Sure, until they have to do the percent difference on 42.5/38.The metric people are all laughing at us.
Or digging through the spare parts bin...Wow! That's a lot of changes. Seems like they were searching for something. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that there is a pun in there about the finish, but I am just not finding it...Going tomorrow to take a look at this, a 1990 Gibby. He says it is in almost mint condition. Currently set up and tuned down one step down, he did not remember the brand of the strings.

Ya need to 'buy a consonant'.I'm pretty sure that there is a pun in there about the finish, but I am just not finding it...
I got one like that. The tone bucket is oval, so there's that, but it's similar. I have to figure out how to rig up a pickup in it to make it more useful. You want to play my bass? Sure, I bring one just in case someone forgets to bring their own...

If it turns out to be as good as it looks, jump all over it at that price!I had to check the pic about the screws too, and yeah, probably black. I’ll know tomorrow.
The pickups that were in the Flamingo were potted in black epoxy. They may be left-over sidewinders from the '70s. I still have them floating around somewhere. Maybe I'll swap the Alumitones in the fretless for those and see how that sounds. You'd have to take the strings off and then unscrew the pickup, some early ones were '76 guts, some potted in epoxy some not. Early ceramic magnet pups are different from the current as well.
Gibson garbled up serial numbers really badly when my EB-2 was built. If they can't even keep track of serial numbers, how would anybody know what they did with pickup designs?I don't have a source for when Gibson made the pickup changes, you'd have to take various years apart and visually inspect them for pickup differences - I know of 6 different pickups being used in Thunderbirds since 1988.
Yeah, probably lower production costs.Wow! That's a lot of changes. Seems like they were searching for something. Thanks!
It might not involve watermelons, so it's not a surprise that it's hard to find.I'm pretty sure that there is a pun in there about the finish, but I am just not finding it...
I was quite surprised, as I would never say anything like that to another bassist. You would think that anyone playing for any length of time would understand that what sounds great to one person may not to another. Were that not the case we would all play the same basses through the same amps. No one wants an awful tone. It may sound like that to others and maybe everyone, but to them there's something in it that rings their bell and works for them.
Chuck's comment below is indeed correct. I think it affects the whole species, but musicians may indeed be "affected" a little more!
The proper response woulda been "Do the letters F.O. mean anything to ya?"I was quite surprised, as I would never say anything like that to another bassist.
You see, I’d be worried that he would agree“Hey man, can I play your bass?”
“Hey man, can I **** your wife?”
yeah, but you’re not Canadian….The proper response woulda been "Do the letters F.O. mean anything to ya?"
Very true. Their genius bass marketing department still could have come up with something clever.Or digging through the spare parts bin...
