Thunderbird Club

I call it that because I personally think it sounds ridiculous. When ten different bands can sound exactly the same and they all sound like the Cookie Monster having an aneurism, I'll take pot shots at them. I like hard rock and acid rock and other types of metal but find the whole Cookie Monster thing a bit silly.

this is just you being narrow minded. it's not like 5 bazillion bands sounding like ac/dc or even more blues bands covering the same stuff for like 40 years.... nooo they don't Sound exactly the same, they're not death metal....

Having been a death metal singer for nearly 10 years and having tried and read thru all the different singing techniques I can tell you: it's NOT all the same.

They do the same here on the local major rock station on Sunday nights that I know of. Not sure about other nights. Not a fan myself but to each their own.

Musically, I don't mind it, a lot of it is HEAVY although the speed riffing gets old quickly. But I just can't get into those growling vocals! Every band ends up, and I hate sounding like my parents (!), sounding the same! Give me a vocalist with some range and dynamics, personal favorites Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate (in his prime), Ray Alder (Fates Warning) among many.

No offense intended vdub that particular style just doesn't appeal to me personally. Again, I like the heaviness of a lot of it but the vocals just do nothing for me. To each his own, we all enjoy what we enjoy because of our own personal preferences. I don't like Rap, I don't like country either but there are plenty of people who do, the world is big enough for all of it.

This is easy. Music involves pitches. Singing is making pitches with the voice. Screaming or growling is not.

There is a continuum, to be sure. McCartney is one of the best singers out there, but he used screaming to good effect. It's like spices - a little bit of it can enhance a dish, but a diet of nothing but is unpalatable.

It's certainly not all the same. That said, it's also mostly not for me. I do like some death metal, but generally the more a band sounds like Cannibal Corpse, the less the chance I'll like them.

Death metal vocalists are certainly real vocalists, but I'm just not into the style. Partly because of the constant speed of the riffing, too. But there are a lot of foods I don't like, either, and it has nothing to do with the skill of the chef.

By this standard, percussionists are not musicians if they aren't playing bells/marimba/xylophone/other mallet instruments. Also there is pitch in screaming/growling, it's just not tuned to a certain note. There is definitely a range of harshly distorted vocals from high to low. Despite being essentially the same kind of vocals, the banshee screams in some black metal are very clearly higher in pitch than typical "cookie monster vocals."

Also how much spice makes a dish unpalatable is as subjective as music.

As with anything, there will be common likes (Thunderbirds!) and a multitude of unlikes. Sartori brought up food, I offer Art, many styles of Art some appeal to me some don't. It's all subjective, respect is the key.

you, sir, have not taken in a single word of what I said. You, sir, are an ignorant.

Noone told your to like death metal vocals, but you don't seem to have EVER spent any thought on singing techniques off clean singing. this is sad. I, as a musician, try to be as open minded as possible. I don't like slappedislap funk but I appreciate the musicianship behind it. So do i with good Pop Songs, with rock, jazz, metal, Reggae, even electronic Music, even if stuff does not Appeal to me. You obviously don't.

Guys! Keep the good tone... This is getting alarmingly close to sounding like the discussions in the "general population" here on TB...

I'm sorry, I just get easily irritated by stuff like that, having fought for my liking to extreme styles of Music thru most of my life (though its sludge and stoner rock more than death metal nowadays)

I spoke my mind, I will say no more to this kinda Topic.

I played my nonreverse again yesterday in the stonerblues band and will do so again tomorrow. Best decision to go for the bird in that band.

Understood, I'll bet most of us have dealt with similar through the years. Given the current political climate here in the states and I'll leave it at THAT, the old sayings "cooler heads must prevail" and "agree to disagree" have never been more on point. Again, respect all. No one person's opinion is any better than the others, all subjective. No better example than our gracious Queen who allows us to ramble on off topic from time to time. It's all good my TBird playing friends! :)

Funny thing is that I didn't see it getting uncivil. Just blunt and people standing their ground without getting disrespectful. That's the difference between in here and other places. We can hash out our difference without harm or foul. I can't say I have spent enough time listening to metal to have much of an opinion of it. And, the crazy thing is that you can play anything on a 'Bird. Some people look at you a little weird when you play country or jazz on a 'Bird, but that's not our problem. Even the rock and roll cover band I play in preferred the Ric, but they were hearing with their eyes. The Ric is sold, and I don't miss it much. The 'Birds do everything it did and more besides.

You can play anything on a 'Bird. I suppose it's got the kind of shape that makes it really suitable for metal in particular, but obviously we don't all play metal.

At the risk of perpetuating this line of discussion, I'd like to say first that I support everybody's right to hold their opinions. There's a big difference between debating about ideas and denigrating the people who hold them. I love a good academic debate, but I abhor and reject ad hominem attacks. Sometimes my enjoyment of the former begins to appear like the latter, but it's never intentional.

And, for the record, I am not "an ignorant"; rather, I am an "overeducated s#!£head"!:laugh: (Obligatory daily Zappa reference)
