Thunderbird Club

It's hard for me to say whether Cobalt flats or Chromes are brighter. They are just a little different, and the Chromes are on a fretted bass with Chinabuckers. The Chromes are on the fretless 'Bird with Alumatones. So, I could answer your question, but it probably wouldn't be a very accurate answer. I would just call them different. Describing sounds with words makes my brain melt anyway.

Aaaaah, these strings have a raspberry bouquet, blossoming into a full, expansive sound with hints of oak and saffon, leading to a satisfying finish...

A few years ago, I had ChromesChromes on my Epi Viola (2 HBs) and I currently have Cobalts on my Jaguar (2 J pups). I can't say whether the Cobalts are brighter, either (given the differences in pickups, scale, etc.) but they sure are growlier than Chromes.

Wow, just went through all the new Gibson offerings. Oof. The normal Firebird and LP Tribute are about the only good looking offerings. I'm all for companies trying to expand what they're doing, but what are some of those finishes? Radiation burst and Bloodburst? And those pickguards on those Specials? And the Zero? Jeez. I mean, I know they've been off the rails for the last couple years, but I think a serious and critical assessment of their products is in order. I think it would greatly behoove them to consolidate their product line, go back to the basic setup with Jr, Special, Standard and Custom models for the SGs and Les Pauls in their classic incarnations.

I don't think I've seen a pic of your double cut. It's been nearly a year since I purchased a bass, I'm getting GAS. Quick, flip us a pic!

Well we can't have you gas free!
I continue to be amazed at how different TB+s can sound in different basses made at different times. They can't all be the same pickup.
These should be the same as those in my ES 335 Bass, but they are much hotter.
I posted a NBD in the general population, largely to see what sort of reaction a Gibson bass might get. Surprisingly, no Gibson haters turned up and a reasonable and informative discussion ensued. There's a bit of a story on how I came by this little beast in the link below.
Plenty of pics there as well.

Unexpected NBD- Gibson Bass Content

Here's one!

What you buy that for? It'll neck dive, the bridge will fall off and it will sound like two mud wrestlers on a dry day :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

So is that a money bass or are there differences?

No they are actually slightly different in a few minor ways.
The Double Cut came out in 2006 as a limited run in 2006 in two colours Black Cherry like mine and Root Beer with gold hardware (there's a great pic of a beautiful one in Root Beer in my NBD thread I linked to above). The Money Bass came out in two separate Guitar Of The Week Releases in 2007. There was a release of highly flamed trans blue ones and another release of natural ones.
The differences between Double cuts and Money Basses as far as I can tell are a different Truss Rod Cover, the Money basses have a laminate of walnut under the maple cap and the colours available from what I can tell.

Who'd have thought, I would get a Gibson hater here? :roflmao:

Short answer, the price. I paid $AU400- that is about $US280. I got a great deal on the two unmarked GK Neo 212s ($AU700- $US500 for THE PAIR) and the guy was looking to unload the bass as well (but hadn't listed it yet because he needed to clean it up). Yes, it certainly needed a clean, service and some minor parts replaced.
I had always liked the look of these LPs but they had been far too pricey out here when new- well north $2500 from memory- so never got one.
Interestingly, this thing does not neck dive, the bridge is rock solid and it sounds like a freight train! And it weighs just over 9 lbs!!!!!But I am sure you know that. :)

I took it to an audition for another band the other night (along with the full rig) with my trusty 73 P Bass and my Chinabucker TBird. ( I got the job BTW)
You know what they say, always bring a Fender to an audition to show them you are a real bass player- so I did. But I wanted to use the other basses.
The output from the LP sounds probably twice that of the P Bass (and the P Bass is a beauty).
I did a couple of songs with the LP, then the P Bass and there is no comparison for "balls to the wall" rock, but with a lighter touch it can be quite sensitive sounding, as well- for example, we did Patti Smith's Because The Night at one stage and it was perfect for the softer parts and absolutely crushing in the heavier parts (with only one guitar playing). I used the Chinabucker TBird for a few as well and it sounds great as well through the full rig at volume.
The audition was supposed to be 10 songs. After we did them they wanted to keep playing and I switched back to the LP Double Cut- I ended up doing another 10 songs with these guys because they were digging it some much.
I had seen them before and the bass player I am replacing used a Warwick with two Jazz Bass pickups- not sure of the model. The band (essentially- drums, guitar and a female singer who plays a bit of rhythm) said to me at the end- it was like they actually had bass.

Bram Tchaikovsky? That is an oldie one-hit wonder guy. I had that album (yes, there was once a form of media called an album) in high school. I believe it might have been called "Strange Man/Changed Man" (?). Sort of a power pop/new wave vibe. He did kind of a cool cover of the Monkees "I'm a Believer" on there too. But it was not as cool as Sex Pistol's cover of "Steppin' Stone"!
