The CP, at least mine, has the standard 1.5" nut width.
The Goth, if it's the normal bolt-on model, will have the usual 1.73" nut width, afaik.

Personally, I'd say the CP is probably a better deal price-wise, but if you don't like the neck-width.....

Both are excellent basses! At those prices though the CP is a much better deal.
I have two Goths, bought one new for around $400 several years ago, bought one used for around $200 about a year ago. Used Goths are easy to find and prices are all over the place. Look hard and you’ll find one for under $400 no problem. CPs are getting harder to find and asking prices on them seems to be going up.

Thanks for the correction. If I can get the CP for $375, I may pull the trigger, it's just a nice to have, nothing's replacing my ThunderP or ThunderJ

CP should be 1.5”

The CP will lean towards the creamy smooth darker side and the VP will lean more towards the punch and grind end of the spectrum, but both have a significant overlap of each other. Think of the CP as an excellent priced modern Gibson Tbird and the VP as an excellent priced Vintage Gibson Tbird. From a bang for the buck standpoint, Epiphone knocked it out of the park on both basses. You can’t go wrong with either one.

Note: they no longer make the CP but still make the VP (although it’s called something different now). So if I came across a CP for under $500 I’d strongly consider buying it over a new VP. A used VP usually runs around $600, anything less than that is a great deal and hard to pass up as well.

Ah heck, just buy both and call it a day, you’ll be glad you did. :)


A Jag with Tbird pups is kind of a custom one off thing, so I guess you could call it a JagOff. ;)

I really like mine, it's one of my favorite & most played basses. :thumbsup:




.....although mine's not completely stock anymore - and I've got a bit more than that $375 in it now......

I have two Goths. The one made in China has a nut width of 1.50”. The one made in Korea has a nut width of 1.73”. Literally everything about the Korean model is better - the fit, the finish, the hardware, the sound, the tuners, etc. I don’t know if that’s typical of all Korean vs Chinese made Goths but if I ever buy another one it’ll be Korean.

It was a fun build, and it’s been a great player so far as well.

Hopefully I’ll be able to post those sound clips in the next day or two, I’ve been getting a lot of how to pointers from @BklynKen (a big hats off to a fine bass brethren). It’s certainly not as intuitive as I would have expected.

The CP is the deal here but my Goth (Chinese) has a 1.73” neck and I think the CP is a 1.5”.

Like George, I think Goths would be the easier pickup at a later date.

Cool amp! I've never played one, or seen one in person for that matter.

The 70s V4-B had a more aggressive sound (just like the recent V4-B reissue), the later series like the BH has a bigger, smoother. I have one of the reissues as well. It's a great head, but it has inherently less heft or bass. But that sucker is really loud. It sounds fantastic cranked and those power tubes start working their magic. But it's so loud you can't do that in normal settings.
