You also can just angle the bottom swivel piece so that the neck is straight vertical. That's what i most often see here. I have to do that with one of my stands anyway because of a slightly bent leg, and nothing's happened to whatever instrument I put on there.
 
Look for a stand with a swiveling center post on the bottom arms - most cheap stands are this way, I thought. It'll adjust to the angle of the bass.

This is what I use for my t-bird and haven't had any problems.
