Thunderfunk Amp club!

How would you guys compare the TF sound to that of an old A.M.P. head? I've got an ancient AMP 260 that I love too much to take on the road, and it sometimes lacks power anyway, so I've been considering a TF 550b, for example. Looks like a very similar design. Similar vibe?

Might want to read up on the history here.

Pretty interesting reading. It I were you, I would put the AMP in a safe place and play it every now and then just for good measure, and pick up a 550B for gigging.

More or less my thinking. I've never played a TF though. Fat and warm like my 260?

I love the tone I get through the Thunderfunk. Both the 750 and the 550. I use a couple of Aggie GS112 cabs (GS & NT).

Here is a live performance of a song we did last month. Some of what you are hearing is stage volume and some is FOH. The sound engineer mic's my cabs.

To me, the Thunderfunk has a nice bass tone but it is solid and projects well. I can always get a good mix with the band.

I think you would like it.

What are the major differences from the 750a and the 800 b2???

From what I remember when speaking with Dave about the new head, I understood that the 800 was beefed up to handle the 2 ohm load better. Slight wattage increase (at 2 and 4 ohm), different heat sinks, a few other things he mentioned, but I can't remember. The 750 and 800 chassis are the same size, the 550 is just a tad smaller. But not by much.

He said I could ship my 750 to him and he could perform the updates to it. One day I might do that, more for getting it checked out than just the upgrades. I don't run a two ohm load anyway.

As you probably know, the Thunderfunk is a very well built head. I don't see me ever parting with either of mine!

It's here. Just plugged in and twiddled the knobs a little, and it's Fat City. Very similar to my 260, as hoped, only louder (and less rare). Digging Tube mode the best. Big, big tone. Love it.
Thanks, michricker. One very happy new owner here. Number please!

Whelp, just one gig so far but it was outdoors with no PA, loud drummer, not so loud guitar/voc. Brought what you see in the pic above and it slaaaaaaayed.......
Creamy, fat, tasty goodness. Tight, punchy, deep, all that good stuff. Amp didn't even get warm. Very nice. Gotta get a few more gigs under my belt but so far I'm loving it!

I bought a used 550 last year and it quickly became my go-to amp. I primarily use it with a Baer ML112 and it totally rocks with that speaker.

To deal with any potential heat issues (just in case - it does run a bit warm but I know it was tricked up by Dave at some point and the fan was one of the items addressed) I bought a 3-rack Alligator amp bag, sat this baby right in the middle and now have plenty of clearance for heat dissipation. Plus I really like the bag because I can easily sling this over my shoulder since the amp is relatively light.

I use minimal EQ - a little low mid boost and a very occasional tweak of the Timbre. That's all it needs for all of my basses to sound really good. I am very happy! :D

Sweet. Just found a like new 800b2 should be here early week. Lookin forward to try this on the gig next week. Ill be going through a berg stack of a hs210 and hs410.

Congrats! I will interested to hear about your experience with the 800. I would like to compare one to my 750A. I don't think there is much difference as far as tone and volume goes. Just beefed up to handle the 2 ohm load a little better....

Let us know what your thoughts are.

Sad news as I will be checking out of the Tfunk club.:hmm:

Way back, I owned an AMP BH420, and loved it. That is why I decided to try out the Tfunk. A trade and a sale both came up, and I decided to bite. I got an old AMP BH420 on the way, and I was able to trade my Tfunk for an Aguilar DB750.

I have only had my Tfunk 550b for a short while, but man, I did some gigs with it, and put some miles on it. It's done small clubs, and big festival stages, been with me in five different states, and considering how big TX is, some of the gigs here might as well be in another state!

The Cabbage Case that Dave offers gets mentioned quite a bit on here, and I thought I would throw up some pics for anyone interested. It is a VERY nice case. Like I said, I took my Tfunk to a few different states, and this case was a champ for travel and did great in the trailer. Beautiful custom fit holds the amp perfectly. Just enough room on the bottom for cables.

So until next time, enjoy those Thunderfunks!:bassist:

Been using a TFB-420 very happily since 2009. I like it so much that it is the head of choice for me for good. It is so nice getting off the merry go round.

I'm considering having Dave take it to 600 spec. My thinking is it has enough miles on it to justify fresh caps, and the changes he's done in the output stage are significant enough to go for the update. I also figure that post update I'll pretty much be set for ten years or so before needing any significant maintenance. That puts me into my mid sixties - by then I'll have a B-15 parked at clubhouse on a golf course somewhere in a sunny state for playing jazz standards at cocktail hour.

Anybody do this, and what should I expect if I do?

I now have a 550b and a 800b2. Wow both heads are awesome. The tone is very similar. A little cleaner tone with the 800. If I had to sell one at this point it would be a tough choice.

When I got the 750 I had intentions of selling the 550B. But I kept the 550B cause there is a difference since it was updated with the newer powerboard. Both are very impressive. But there is something about the compression in the 550 in the low end that just sounds so good.

Hi, just a quick update. I have been using my TFB550 regularly for a few months now and have to say it is probably the best amp I have ever owned. Like most on here I am only using the enhance and timbre controls and they are perfect in all situations. I cant imagine gigging without it now.
