Thunderfunk Amp club!

^^^^^^^ THIS^^^^^^^

fantastic rig, man.
been dreaming about barefaced and Thunderfunk but they are are. I own a 550, how does it match with the mighty 215? Is the 550 watts output of the Thunderfunk sufficient to let the cab sing and breathe?

Hi sratas, thanks. The cab is a 2x12". It is an awesome cab. I have only managed to get the TF on 4 on the master volume and it was immense!
Using the cab with my old Ashdown head a fellow bass player thought the bass was going through the PA. It wasn't, this cab is fine as back line alone. With the TF it is even better!!

Hi deanovw...which model barefaced cab is that? Thanks.

quick update to my amp experience.

recently I have gigged a very good Markbass head. On the paper and by ear it sounds pretty darn killer.

The point is: don't do a mistake, bring always at gigs the THUNDERFUNK. There is nothing like these heads on a gig, they cut through with personality, and this is the point

Hmmmm. Well, I've put a few miles on my 550B and I'm just not bonding with it. Doesn't feel like a bigger version of my A.M.P.260 as I'd hoped. I keep going back to it and my old GK800 RB. The TF is clean and wide and beautiful but just lacks a certain 'something' that both other amps deliver. Oh well. Nice amp but not my thing.

may add anothe gig report?

venue: open space. Fighting with my only rig against a 1200 watts medium quality Pa carriyng voice anf guitar.
approx. 30-40 folks just near the stage, a hollow one, pretty little venue...

Genre: folk and popular music, but with great changes between a song to another

My gear: TF 550 B trough a Aguilar DB 112. Volume on 5, little bost at 220 Hz, all remaining controls nooned, filters off.

the tone wasn't my preferred one and finally I found the TF and Aguilar combination is not to my liking, but this time, I was able to hear myself very clearly in the mix, even if the cab was almost pointing at my ankles...the overall bass tone was just right.
Very different experience comparaed to the previous gig were I played another head with the DB 112.
Now I was able to hear all things perfectly. I think this improvement has to be accorded to the TF presence only...

I'm considering picking up a used 550B, would pair it with a GB Uber 410.
Has anyone ever tried this combination, or have any thoughts on this being/or not being a good match.
Thanks

I don't think there's any such thing as a bad combination of anything with a Thunderfunk. I bought a used 550B 2 years ago and use it with an Aguilar GS212 and a Baer ML112. All of my basses sound great through both.

I have several other very nice amps and the 550B has become my go-to head.

Hi All!

It's quite long time now, I've been thinking to move from my combo (sound is OK, but heavy :hmm:), and finally get a head + cabinet solution.
Started to look around, tried combinations, etc... My bass is a Laurus; had a good impression playing with TC RH450 head, but not fully convinced. Meanwhile, I got more and more interested into the TFB series, found online demo and comparisons: Thunderfunk sounds just great :hyper:

I'm looking for a new one and a shop in Germany (Berlin area) where I can go to see it, or e.g. for a used TFB550 in very good conditions. From the website, it seems the TFB550 is no longer produced, in that case I could go for a TFB600.

I tried to find sale announcements of an used TFB, but they were really few :crying:
Is the order via Thunderfunk website the only option? In that case I would have no chance to try it first... can you please help me?

Another option would be to go for a similar head; what would you suggest me in a cheaper range, for example around 600-900€?

Thanks!!

Hi man,
don't surrender, you will be pleased with the TF tone for life. It simply is worth the battle to own one.

In Italy there is a used TFB 550 for sale:

You you want a new unit contact Roberto Ainardi on the website groovemania.it.
He is the italian importer and seller of the Tf heads, he's a very good guy to deal with, super kind and serious when it comes to selling his products.
If you prefer to go this route, tell him that Mariano told you to contact him.

GIG REPORT.

Bar with long and narrow room, raised hollow stage, approximately 50 people.

The Thunderfunk rocked the house with a giant, growly and ballsy tone, huge but without any mud, punchy.
I have never had this tone before. It was the most accurate representation of the "sound in my head".
Sound chain: G&L jazz bass - TFB 550 - Bergantino AE 210.
This time I put the Berg just below and off the stage, firing toward the audience and with the bass ports backwards and directed to the underneath the hollow stage.
Maybe this time the reflex has been reinforced by the mechanical coupling of the stage, usually a bad thing to avoid, but not this time. I simply could not believe, it seemed that I had a wall of 4 x12 cabs behing me, and many other trusty musicians in the audience commented how bold but totally forceful and tight was my bass tone. I almost gained a new commitment from another band's leader because I just sounded too good.

My Thunderfunk 550 was set as follows:

enhance: nooned
bass: + 2 dots
slight cut, approximately - 2 dB at 150 Hz
cut, approximately -4 dB at 1K (to correct the built-in bump at that frequency of my cab)
Timbre: - 2 dots
gain with the limiter engaged but rarely engaged
master at 10:30 o' clock

Big juicy, fat and tight and growly tone

Thanks for the reply,
I've been bouncing back and forth between a Thunderfunk and a Mesa M6.
I think I have settled on the Thunderfunk.

Fellow Thunderfunkers,

I am playing a Fender P-bass strung with Labella's flats through a THunderfunk 550 (pre-switch) into a Traynor cab with a 15 and 2 10's packed inside. I play regularly in the worship band at our church and I get comments on my tone every week.

Im looking to add a small amount of overdrive or 'tubey-like grit' to my tone, kinda Jamerson-esque. Not full in your face, but just the subtle growl. The catch is, I don't want to mess with the thick, full low end and tone of the Thunderfunk.

Has anybody had any luck with any particular pedals that don't take away the deep low end but has added the grit? I have a Tech21 VTbass V2 but Im not quite sure about that one yet. Maybe I need a pedal with a blend to mix my clean with the dirty?

Any opinions are welcome!

IMO and IME, the Aguilar Tonehammer pedal is very nice for that sort of 'grind without all out distortion' type vibe. Nice EQ, nice range of warm overdrive, DI, and a master volume to control the output to the amp so you don't get a volume jump when you engage it (unless you want one).

LOTS of pedals out there to get there, but for bass, and the type of thing you are looking for, hard to go wrong with the Tonehammer IMO. Nice way to bring out the upper mid grind a touch more, and fatten the entire tone.

Might also recommend a VT bass pedal. I've never used one, but lots of dudes like them,,, especially if you are looking for a Jamerson type thing!

It hard to find a pedal that does that kind of driven tube amp thing without being just a big ole distortion pedal. Good luck. What ever you get should sound nice through the T-Funk.
