Thunderfunk Question - Limiter

IIRC.. yours had the newer Power amp board.. similar or the same as the newer 750.. But you still have the same power supply that you had in the 550B as when it was new...And not the newer power supply that is in the 750.... The newer PS and transformer that is in the 750 is slightly taller IIRC and will not fit right in a 550 Chassis.. again IIRC.
And your preamp board would have been the same unchanged 550B.
The only upgrade that you got was the 750 Poweramp Board with the added small CAPS right on the output transistors/ power amp board itself which added to some extra speed of the amp..
That was in a phone call with Dave about 2 years ago..
Your amp does kick some tail... It was fun doing an AB with my little killer when i was there.

Your right.................I am thinking the power amp board and supply is somewhat one of the same as it is not :eek: But again it did not increase the power per se. But you are right the Power amp board was updated. I am still not selling it. But it did go up to 625, at least thats what Dave said................. Oh no ............. Did I start something ???????????????????????????????? Be good....................
 
What exactly does the Timbre do? is this a subjective thing or can somebody qualify it specifically?

+1 to the above description. It's a total revoicing knob, going from a 'treble rolloff bass boost' in one direction, and a bass roll-off and seemingly an upper mid boost in the other.

I found that knob too extreme at anything more than a slight move off the center detent, but I prefer my amplification somewhat flat and transparent. It's useful at low levels to compensate for an over dark or overly bright bass or cab though, and is similar to the 'taste' control on the new TecAmp Puma amps, and the 'balance' control on the Walter Woods amps since about the late 90's.
 
Thanks for the info guys.... my trade deal fell thru so no TFB for me just yet. Need to get back to work and get some of that green paper stuff. Its of no use to me, but the people who sell gear seem to like it...

Hm. That was interesting, but he never did actually answer the question. I could interpret what he said to mean that the output is in phase with the input, which is a valid concept, except under most circumstances that change would be inaudible since you only ever hear the output. I could also interpret what he said to mean that a well-designed circuit doesn't alter the signal passing through it in unwanted or unintentional ways--also a valid concept, certainly, but not having much to do with the phase of the wave necessarily.

Please note I'm not arguing with you here or trying to bust your chops, I'm actually interested to know exactly what he's talking about from a technical standpoint.


My understanding of what Dave was getting at (and it's just that, I most certainly could be wrong) is that essentially any EQ introduces some phase shift given the nature of what it is and thus "blurs" the sound. The design goal being to minimize this phase shift through better parts/design/whatever and making it more coherent and thus tighter/less blurry/pick-your-descriptive-term.
 
See, it's tricky, the terms used. "Phase" specifically refers to the difference in timing between two otherwise identical (or nearly identical) signals. It is only perceptible when you can hear or see both at the same time. In the case of EQ, this comes up when the signal is split into multiple bands, and those bands overlap. It's in the overlapping areas that we do in fact hear phase issues. So if he was only talking about the EQ section being phase coherent, then that makes sense.
