Thunderfunk VS. Markbass

+1... the Eden enhance is not a good thing. The Thunderfunk enhance is wonderful... subtle and musical all the way up to the 11 o'clock setting or so. It sounds like Markbass got it right also!

I use the filters because its quick and easy and i can get a nice tone. I use the EQ more to fine tune to the room. in fact i normally just boost the lows a bit and maybe a bit of low mid boost just to put back a bit of what the VPF takes out.
Off Topic but im looking to get a Gallien-krueger 1001-RB II now as i do want a more coloured sound and a bit more power in to 8ohms

Have you tried the MB SD800, I just wonder if the digital power amp gives this amp a different sound than the other MB amps

For my tastes, the Eden enhance is a good thing, I always use some, but I will say two things about it... too much and it quickly becomes a suck knob, and yeah, the TFB enhance is better.

+1... nothing wrong with the Eden circuit used VERY sparingly, but it gets ugly much quicker than the TF, and to me, it's more of an 'on/off' thing... there's really only one sort of 'sweet' spot in that circuit, versus the very subtle, gradual impact of the TF knob.

Yeah, I agree more with that way of putting it. Definitely I find that there's one place I want it, and anything much below or above that is a negative. However, that said, I'd never own an Eden without one. It's a critical fine tune for personal tastes, IMHO.

I am one of the few people that have had both amps at the same time, although my Tfunk was a 420.

As far as the VLE and VPF vs. the Timbre functionality, I found the Timbre control much more useable. A lot of the VPF and VLE function I felt could easily be obtained by altering my right hand technique and/or onboard EQ changes. The Timbre control does something which I can't do myself.

This is not to say that I felt the Markbass was a bad head, far from it. I liked the Markbass a lot, and I only traded it to try this crazy Mesa I am using. Right now, if I could afford it and actually had reason to have three heads, I would have the Little Mark, Thundefunk 550 and the Mesa M-2000.

I owned/gigged a TFB. I disagree that it seemed any louder than what the ratings suggest. The MarkBass seemed as loud to me, though I certainly didn't A/B.

I preferred the two LME/LMV (can't quite recall the names) controls on the MarkBass to the Timbre on the TF.

MB is smaller, lighter, cheaper, and while I sold my TF I might be buying a MB. If nothing else, it'd make a killer backup and while I should bring a backup head to gigs I seldom do. With the MB I can put it in my gigbag and at only 6 lbs not really notice it much. Can't do that with a TF.

Brad, if you've now gigged these, what do you prefer or will you at least say what difference you hear? I had the Gibson too, so compare/contrast to that one as well if you think it worthwhile.

Funny thing is, I haven't taken the TF out since I got the LMII. I've been rotating the LMII and a pair of iAmp350's the last couple of months. I'll take the TF out tomorrow night and A/B them.

Bottom line, they all work well for me. Last week I pretty much hit the wall with the iAmp driving a pair of VL 110 cabs, guess the room had something to do with it because up until then I hadn't. The LMII seems to push anything easily, even easier than I remembered with the TFB420.

That was my first thought untill i saw the price of it.
To be honest i dont need masses of power, just a bit more headroom and as my cab can handle it i want an amp that gives a bit more. my SA450/1210 rig is very loud but i dont need all that volume and wouldnt get it wth the UL115 anyway but im guessing at over 100watts more from the GK ill have better headroom. Im also wanting to try a different sound to the MB sound

Just seen the new low price of the LMII (£385). I might even just get that to save me having to cart a rucksack around with my SA450 in it.

I've owned a 420, and have ordered a LMKII. I was looking for something small, light, and relatively powerful, with a decent EQ section since all of my basses are (currently) passive. I used the EQ for the bass, say to add some low mids to an ash body, for example, then used the filters to tailor that tone to my ears. It was a really great little amp, and I look forward to gigging it soon.

I'm very interested in what you hear on the gig. Will you be bringing the VL or Nahas cabs?

An old thread back to life!

The TF550b is discontinued in place of the new TF750a. I believe Dave has parts for some final TF550b's that he is selling for a discount (under the original $1,295 selling price.. not sure how much under, but a I assume at least a couple of hundred). The best thing to do is to Email Dave Funk from the Thunderfunk website.

Update - I e-mailed him and he said that there are 6 TF550-b's left. There is no discount.

The TF750-a's price is going up by $100 soon, too. No changes to the functions.

Anyone have anything new to add to this great thread (maybe even TFB750A compared to any of the Markbass heads)?

[I think if the SD800 sounded more like the F1 (or somewhere in between the LMII and F1) that would be a very interesting comparison to the TFB70A. ~~Do you think any Markbass engineers read talkbass?~~]

I don't do outdoor gigs very often, but when I do, I like to have enough headroom to not worry about pushing my amp hard and still being plenty loud w/o PA support (which I seldom have).
