I had no clue going in. There are all of these kind of threads for other strings: Evahs, Bels, Velvets, Doms, Obligatos, etc. Spiros need a thread of their own, so here it is. Like everything else, it had a good start, but now it has settled down. There will be the occasional post going forward, and I encourage everyone to at least try a Spiro E string with whatever their favorite setup is. It just seems to bring out the best of whatever a bass has to offer. With at least seven different Spiro E strings to choose from, and more if you include the E/C extended strings and low B strings, there is a Dead Spiro E, or E/C, or B, for everybody.

Double Bass Time for a Dead Spiros Club

in that case I feel a strong obligation to infrom the club that the E-string from my set has died first, months or even years before of the other three family members ;-)

Three Spiro low C strings to choose from here, Red Mitchell mittel and weich + 3/4 weich. Currently sporting mittel C, it shakes floors.
edit: Broken in ( Red Mitchells ), not dead yet. I quess this makes me kinda dead Spiro club hangaround.

I have Spiro mittels in my new bass, I also have some used G & D Spiro weichs that I think qualifies as dead spiros. Oh! and a new set of Spiro weichs coming my way as we talk. Still making up my mind about what string combo will be on this bass for a long time. I'm very happy with the mittel D & A but I find the E to be maybe too thick and tense for my liking.
It never occurred to me anyone actually liked that crappy dead string sound. Jeez, over the last 30 years I've thrown out dozens of sets of Spirocore Weichs and Mittels, several sets of Solos and a couple of sets of Lycons someone gave me for free...they stopped making those Lycons didn't they? After about 3 months when that awesome metallic twang starts to go away I just cut them off right at the bridge and throw them in the trash like I do for my electric basses. I guess I could save them but who'd want them? And it's a helluva lot easier just to cut them off the bass than to do all that unwinding.
It's expensive and a hassle but it's totally worth it...people comment on my sound constantly. But even so I'm always looking for improvement......anyone have a String Charger they wanna sell?

iiipopes: OK....time for me to apply to join this exclusive club. But I have not had a pure heart. 
I have a Mittel E that has been on my bass constantly for a minimum of 6 years. We are meant for each other. My newest Spiro Weich A ( Bob Gollihur) has been on for the past couple of years but its predecessor bought about 5 years ago from Heinl's in Toronto, is still in my spare string box. My D Weich is quite new (October 2014-Gollihur) but the previous one ( Heinl's) is also in my spare string box.
However....with the exception of the Mittel E (can't remember where it came from but it was new), I must admit infidelities. Since 2007 I have tried many other strings for periods of time ranging from days to a couple of months. But I have always returned to the Weich A and D. I gave the boot to the Weich G a couple of times but it won't be back. I found another...her name is Zyex medium.
So there it is......I promise not to stray again. Spiros forever on the E, A and D. Is there room in the Dead Spiros Club for a contrite soul such as me?

Although it never really occurred to me until now, I have been using the same set of Spirocore Weichs for 9 years. They certainly last a long time. I've tried other strings, mostly on other basses, but these are my favorites. I like bowing them too.
Lots of people love that Dead spiro sound. I can't imagine changing strings every 3 months. You can defiantly sell 3 month old spiros on here for a good price.
Couldn't be bothered. I'll just keep cutting 'em off and throwing 'em out.
Oh, but since I have a set of supremely dead 3/4 Solos that came on the bass and I didn't cut off because I couldn't find my cutters I want in the club.
Start listing them here on the forum for sale. You will be amazed how quickly they will sell. You have probably thrown away over $1000 to $2000 that you would have recouped if you had sold your used strings here instead of throwing them away. That goes a long way towards new sets of strings.

You can be in the club if you promise to at least try to keep them on the bass for six months, and start selling your Dead Spiros instead of throwing them away - provisional #17 - waiting on response to promise to not throw them away.

I won't have any strings for sale but I do have this bridge I could sell you.....it goes from San Francisco to Oakland. You could charge a toll and get your money back.
