They both have their own qualities.
DR are made entirely by hand. After each winding layer they are removed from the lathe, inspected, remounted, etc... I have been to their factory so have seen it first hand.
Dunlop I have not seen but to my understanding the majority of production is automated.
When I was at the D'Addario factory I saw one guy running 8 machines at once, a couple of then doing multiple strings at a time!
Cost goes into materials and man hours.

Clearer sound, crunchier in the mids, better longevity, and half the price helps!
At that price, you can afford to try both. I've used the nickels but this time I'm in for 2 sets of nickels and 3 sets of steel....6 string sets to get the 130 B string.

Ah, live a little...be daring...take a chance. The steels are going on my Pedulla 5 as they were original equipment...sounds terrible with nickels.

Haha, I am getting them for my Pedulla as well(Thunderbass 5). Was the Stock B a 130?
No, I think they were 45-65-80-100-128 but all (excluding the G) tapered. If you've been using Pedulla strings, prepare for a major re-set.

There's a fresh set of D'addorio XL's(Nickel) 45-130 on it but I don't like them. My Thunderbass 5 is a 1997 so I don't know what came on it.

I was gonna say "send 'em to me" but the existing bends / witness points may be a problem...here's why. I'm putting a fresh set of XL's on my NS Design CR5 as they are the stock string and the one piece bridge saddle can be tricky in terms of intonation. Here's the problem: the strings are installed backwards so what was the afterlength will be passing over the nut. Any bends will end up in the vibrating string length.

I ordered two sets of Stainless. One 6 string set and one 4 string. I might stick the 4's on My Ric
I think we oughta collect all the unused C strings from the 6 string sets (...I can contribute 5 from the git-go) and send them to some primitive tribe in New Caledonia. I think we'll be amazed at some of the non-bass applications they come up with.
FWIW, that's what they do with the loser jerseys following the Super Bowl. They print both up well ahead of time...that's why the winner jerseys show up so quickly on QVC following the game. The balance is shipped to economically-stressed countries in Africa and such. For some inexplicable reason, there seems to be more than a fair share of Bills jerseys circulating about since the mid 80's.
