Tiny pedals (1590A pedals)

Joe, does the compressor being after the boost counteract things a bit? Or are you using it to push the compressor harder on purpose?

Sent from my iPad using TalkBass

Sometimes I use the booster in conjunction with the compressor for better input control, thus giving me more comp output selection. NOTE: I don't need boost after the compressor (the SP has plenty of boost), and/but if I did need/want it, I can/could get it afterwards from the EQ.

+1 to all of that, I'm in the same boat, UK-based. The discount outlets in the Far East don't seem to have that brand.

Got my hands on a Hotone Octa and it's disappointing. I'd hoped it could replace my MXR BOD which I like, but was hoping to go all 1590a size or under - all my other pedals are.

The main lower tone itself is nice, but subtle. It's not as well defined as the MXR, which cuts through so you get the two basses locked in unison effect. The Hotone sound is more of a blend adding depth, and there's a touch of modulation. That's not just the way I had the knobs adjusted - the octave tone wouldn't go any louder. The dirty switch to 'analogue' is a plus, and that cuts through more - but i wasn't looking for this sort of sound..

However, there was a similar issue to what I found on the Mooer Pure Octave in that the pitch of the octaved sounds is off. I'm not just talking the hint of detuning which can give a pleasant thickening of the sound. The octave up is so out that it's embarrassing.

The tracking is not wonderful on the Hotone either. I'm using Chrome Flats which in my experience pitch-track better than brighter rounds, and I go through a Xotic SL which usually gives sufficient sustain that octaver tracking doesn't wobble as extended notes die away.

I'm probably expecting too much of a £65 device comparing it with a pedal twice the price, but then some of the Mooers do bear comparison with more expensive options. This Hotone is not even close.

So I'm resigned to the fact that I'll not get an all 'micro' set up. At least the MXR BOD at 6cm wide is still fairly compact.

Thanks's for that mini review ... sounds like it has all the issues of the Pure Octave. But do you think those issues go away in the 'analogue' mode ... I'm asking because it sounds like you didn't play with that mode much.

No, I didn't - was looking for the more natural sound. I play some songs in keys which go out of optimal range e.g. Eb that go up-over, and need an octaver to restore some depth. A 5 strings bass would solve it, but I prefer narrower necks.

The tracking was the same in dirty mode - glitches were more noticeable because of the different sound. I've sent it back, otherwise I'd test it more.

Looks like TC Electronic have some new minis. Sorry, this might be old news, because I noticed when they cropped up on eBay.

Very interested in these TC mini ones especially the corona chorus. I'm guessing they're digital due to tweaking via tone print. Maybe there are adjustable parameters that would make it more bass friendly - EQ, low filter.

I'm positive they're digital. There was a recent exchange on the TC twitter:
“Also, how come the Mojo isn't available with Toneprint?”
“the mojomojo is all analogue, and TonePrint is a digital technology. So that's why :)

Maybe there are adjustable parameters that would make it more bass friendly - EQ, low filter.

I think there's a good chance of that, I researched the HOF mini when it came out and the screenshots of the toneprint editor for that showed lots of opportunities for tweaks:

All of that, don't forget, in a pedal that almost down at 1590A size !

Does anyone else also feels that internally all these new TC minis are the same. They could probably make them into a generic pedal which you could update over the net but I think we in the bass community wouldn't buy them for psychological reasons or because of TC's market analysis.

almost certainly. The other toneprints are probably the same. I'm fairly certain the chorus/flanger etc toneprints could run each others' fx if TC would allow it. Gets weird though, because you'd need a lot more text on the face or a good lcd display.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all to find the mini toneprint pedals are all the same in hardware terms with differences in the firmware. It possible though, that allowing for reliable firmware updates over the 'net might possibly add more complexity at the hardware level ... I've never done that sort of programming (i.e. signal processing chips) so I don't know.

Hi Ricky
Yeah, I like the tiny Xotic SP compressor - it works good for my needs. Is there something in particular that you'd like to know about it?

Hey Joe

Is it right that the SP is based on the Ross circuit? Did they make any changes that make it more appropriate for bass? I have an AnalogMan Mini-Bi Comp that has a Ross side and a Squeezer side. While I find the Squeezer works great for bass, the Ross not so much.

Many thanks. I do love your nano board. Seriously sweet.

The Mooer Green Mile distortion pedal is a nice stomp box for bass. I'm using mine lightly for a sweet tube breaking up type sound. Mode set to HOT, Level at 1 o'clock, Tone at 11 o'clock, Overdrive at 8:30 o'clock (see pic). I'm really liking this little tiny overdrive pedal.

Same question on this as for the SP. The Green Mile is a Tube Screamer circuit right? A modded Tube Screamer (AnalogMan, Keeley etc) can make for a great overdrive for bass, while the unmodded ones are not ideal. Does the Green Mile keep the low end?
