Tiny VT Alternative?

lol. that's funny Mingus'e. i was just reading up as much as i could find on the M-80 and it seems to get very good reviews for the DI, the distortion seems pretty useable, and it is the right size.

gonna check one out tomorrow i think.

anybody here use one? in OD kinda trying to get the sorta grindy, not full on distorted.

I'd look into their "Leeds" pedal - it's for a bass as well, and has more of a "Marshall" character to it, which to me sounds more aggressive than the Ampeg sound, which the VT is supposed to emulate.

I know i may be the odd-man out here, but overdriven Ampegs sound waterlogged to me. I'm more a fan of the Marshall/Mesa sound on bass.

I always had very good results running other dirt (especially the XXLB) into the BDDI. I didn't do as much of it with the VT Bass but from a very small sample size I wasn't nearly as happy with the result.

Oh dear.

I was hoping to use the VT Bass at the end of my signal chain as a pre-amp when recording direct, but not sounding good with dirt running into it would be a problem.

And the Darkglass looks almost perfect for this, but is so expensive.

What is a boy to do?

:hmm:

Matt.

yeah, one of the problems for me is that i have NO experiance with amps. i can't really envision what an Ampeggy vs Marshal vs Eden tone is. i've always run some type of preamp into a power amp. i know player's tones i want to emulate (Billy Gould and Melt Banana's bass player are what pop into my head right now), but i don't know the gear these pedals are going for.

i just tried a Hot Cake and a Dirty Little Secret. i've had a Hot Cake before and didn't love it. i had a VERY different setup then tho. i grabbed the Dirty Little Secret to try at home.

hoping i dig it. anybody have it?

good god. has it come to this?

seven inches is now a SMALL PACKAGE??!?

i mean, i'm proportionate and all, but that's the SMALL side of the scale??!??!?

..... guess i gotta drink more milk.

Bad Monkey might be the dirt part of your small package...

Considering the above quotes, may I offer up to consideration my personal favorite out of my effects package: my Way Huge Swollen Pickle.;)

Billy Gould. I always thought his mid/late 80's tones were like an unpolished tone similar to that of Tool. Lots of grind and attack, yet have nice warmth as well.

I used a Tri-AC for a while, and recently upgraded to the PSA. They both get that tone. I'd imagine the Leeds pedal is very similar in character, as I have heard convincing clips from this site.

Billy used lots of Peavey gear over the years, and got great grind out of S.S. amps. The pedals I like aren't so focused in the mids as much as they just have good bottom and great "grind" and top-end attack, without having to sound "scooped".

yeah. kinda the pick tone with out having to learn to play with a pick?

just spent some quality time with the Dirty Little Secret and i'm digging it a lot. only used it with my small, play around setup, but it does at a nice little something. dunno if this is the OD i want to stay with, but it's definitely in the right direction of what i was thinking of.

gonna be able to get loud with it Friday, and i'll PULL OUT THE BIG board and PLAY WITH IT in a little bit.

you satisfied you little degenerates?

lovable, lovable degenerates?

I've got an SFT that works great with my MIA P + Flats, usually keep the overdrive really low until the end of my sets and really crunch it out

I cant use it at all with my Ric-o-Sound though, so dont think about running it in parallel, as it gets some annoying phase issues and all the low freq's vanish, but in Mono it sounds great

EBS are also really good pedals, I've got my eye on the tubedrive one

You just need to get a tube into your signal chain and overdrive it.

again, OD's are NOT my area of the expertise, but i think the Hot Cake has a BB/Something Else I Forget switch on the inside. ane i thoight the BB stood for BlueBerry? wassat?

I think pedals are getting mixed up. Let me see if I can help.

Xotic Bass BB preamp: Tube Screamer influenced OD for Bass

HotCake BluesBerry(BB): HotCake with mod to the high end response

BJFE Blue Berry: Infamous hard to find/expensive bass overdrive pedal generally considered to be the shiz

awesome AND soul-killing part of TalkBass? mention an idol and you're going to hear stories that make you like the idol even more, but want to kick the story-teller in the face because you weren't there.

well played. well played sir.

thppppppbt!

more like on The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies ( ). so angry, so grindy, so badass. and i am not a man that uses the word badass gratuitously.

see what you did Mr. Gould? see what you made me do?

i met Billy (i can call him by his first name since i covet his tone so) one time. the singer i play with right now was in a band that was signed to his label. he seemed very cool. i had nothing to say to him. too much of an idol.

same thing when i met Les Claypool. i actually told him, "i... i.... i don't know how to talk to you".

Eruk - i can haz yer Rusty Box?

looks so delicious. a bit big for what i'm going for tho.

i got to try out an M-80 for a bit tonight (thanks CtlVLTr!). it's a nice little thing. it's got some very useable tones in there i think.

but i do have a BassBone (damnit Radial) on the way. so now the dirty dirt search continues! woot!
